With my new computer next year im looking into getting a good monitor with it, quite a few people have said go for a 1600x1200 one, but there are no good ones for under £300, so i think im going to have to go for a 1680x1050 widescreen for about 250ish. But are these any good for gaming? because i would have thought a lot of games dont support this res, and is it better/worse than 16x12?

thanks

Personally I believe wide screen monitors to be nicer to view than large 5:4 or 4:3 monitors, the aspect ratio is much more natural and in games can offer a larger field of view, which is useful. For gaming you might want to look at the 22" monitors as they're larger which gives more immersion into the game and they are based on TN film panels which have faster response times (in general) than some of the mva and ips based 20" monitors an can be picked up fairly cheap. Most games now support wide screen resolutions or can be fixed as shown in a link further up the page.

I recently took the plunge and chopped my 19" iiyama crt for an acer 22" w/s and it's fantastic :) no more squinting at text and really is superb in games, at the moment I'm playing gothic3, neverwinter 2, dark messiah and double agent (not all at the same time) and guildwars at the weekends with my mates. guildwars just has to be seen to be believed, it is so much prettier on the lcd. The only problem I've got is that my 5.5 month old maine **** kitten ( who weighs 5.3kgs) keeps trying to jump on top of it like he did the crt :o
scary plus

my system is modest by todays standards, Amd 64 4000+, 7900gt, 2gig ram,
but runs @ 1680 x 1050 more than playably. happy, happy I am.

Do you not see any ghosting on your Asus ? Mine is particularly bad with dark objects in front of lighter backgrounds like in this pic.

unfortunatly I dont have a camera to show the effect but its the same in a ny game with dark in from of light. Ive just tried dark messiah and noticed it in some situations.
