Is windows 8 better for games?

I have 64bit copy of windows 8 ready but dunno if its worth installing?

I know boot times and file transfer is much better but i also read that gaming gets small FPS increases?

Can anyone confirm this?

I will buy a new harddrive and try it if so :)
 
I would think that early drivers might have an undesired impact on performance.

I'm more concerned that the Metro interface is just consumer shroud that they are getting something for their money when behind the scenes a lot more has changed. I read somewhere that the OS cracks down on piracy which can only be a good thing but at what cost to the developers? Does every games or app have to pass Microsoft certificate before it's allow to run on the platform?

I think consumers are still confussed as to what they are getting. A new Od normally brings a new version of DX but this isn't the case.. So just what are we getting. it stinks as far as I'm concerned.

Doesn't realy improve in game performance, it's pretty much identical to win7 in terms of game performance, maybe slightly faster.

The big differnce is the other features. Like boot speed, that alone means I could never go back to w7, it's to infuriating waiting. Then you have loads of other features, but they're all discussed in the feature thread.

Well you get dx11.1

And how does it stink?
You get a load of new usefull features in win8. Metro isn't just a shroud, far from it. Wether you would use those features is a different matter.

Not seeing any noticeable difference in gaming performance. NVidia's Surround drivers/config are not as good as the Windows 7 drivers however.

All Metro Apps will need to be validated by MS - this is where Steam and Blizzard don't like the way it's heading - as MS will control and take a cut of anything through their store - it competes with their distribution methods.

Desktop/legacy apps games will be unchanged and unless you've read otherwise MS won't be interfering with the distribution/protection on legacy x86 games.

Overall though if you're just looking to Windows 8 solely for a cheap FPS boost don't bother.
 
Well i was looking for an overall boost tbh, i get every OS free as im a member of some IT shiz so its just sitting there doing nothing.

The boot times are supposed to be amazing but with an SSD i suppose i can get that with win7 anyways.

Maybe ill wait i dont like the sounds of this piracy thing and checking on my hd for what ive got.

Hmm, dx11.1 lol? what does that add?

Personally i think it was made for mobile devices and to compete in the phone OS market like apple, ill stick with win 7 for now then.

It's kind of made for mobile devices, but its stil made for desktop. There's a huge number of improvements that are good on desktop and that includes metro, once you learn to use it.
 
I still dont understand dx11.1 fully some minor features? do games use this?

Does Nvidia use it? i see it on all the ATI cards but Nvidia just says dx11?
 
This thread is a classic example of the FUD machine at work.

The op has a reasonable expectation of what the new OS might offer, gets sidelined by conjecture and misinformation and then leaves thinking Windows 8 scans your hard drive for pirate software.

I don't see this problem, None of the Windows have been any different for gaming. Maybe give or take 1 fps or something. Infact Windows 7/Vista > XP for gaming purely because it could handle more ram in 64bit!
 
Well i suppose i could trust you 46k posts i bet you know your stuff lol. I will install on a new HD when i get my new PC hopefully any bugs lingering are gone by then.

The boot times im really looking forward to :)

Id say Vista was a complete fail tbh the ammount of ram it used when idle was just retarded. Games did play ok but 7 is by far the best until 8 is more used even 2-4 fps increase could go from under to 30+ fps and that is all that matters
