I want to encrypt some files around 200mb and I only got Winrar. Is it secure enough? What encryption is used by Winrar anyway? Can somebody recommend some free alternative that is better that winrar.

thanks

WinRAR uses AES-256 for encryption (which is pretty much the standard for a lot of government agencies, including the US), which has not been broken yet (well, publically anyway :D ), and so is secure. As such, it can only be attacked using brute-force methods which, if your password is long enough and uses enough characters/digits, would take many years to break (hundreds or thousands).

Truecrypt can use multiple encryption algorithms (three I think - one of which is AES-256), if required, which makes it even more secure.

NOTE: It's possible some governments have broken AES encryption, but none have admitted to it.

WinRAR also allows you to encrypt filenames. When disabled, you can see the filenames within the archive, but can't access the file contents (ie. because they are encrypted). When enabled, you can't see the filenames or access the file contents because both are encrypted.
