Is wireless N worth it?

Hey all

A friend of mine is looking for a new wireless router as the range on his current one isn't great - his Dell XPS M1330 keeps dropping the wireless signal from upstairs. The XPS has an Intel Wireless N adapter, so I was wondering if one of these routers would solve his problems?

Does 802.11n actually give much of a speed and range boost at the moment or is it still a bit of a gimmick like 108MBps wireless g? If it's any good, could I get a few recommendations for decent ADSL Modem routers?

Thanks

It's definitely a genuine boost as it is (or will be!) a real standard unlike any 108Mb/s. The only thing that worries me is that it's still a draft standard and I'm too old and cynical to believe the manufacturers that a firmware update will convert their products from draft to full standard.

As long as you have a matching router & wifi card I would say go for it.
I trialled a belkin pre N model a good few years ago now and was staggered at how good the range was. I could walk out the door with my laptop and a few hundred feet away between our 2 office buildings before the connection was lost. With the existing 54mbps AP I could only get as far as the door.

Thanks for the replies, sounds like it's worth it then.

Anyone got any recommendations for good wireless n modem routers?

Any of the N network routers are decent these days. I would say netgear myself or linksys.
