I hear stories that some people play WoW and never leave and or on it 24/7, now I have looked at it a little and took note of the popularity of it, naturally but Id like to play it, but I dont want to live in it so to speak.

I work full time etc, so im not gonna be home a lot of the time to play it, or perhaps wont benefit out of limited play?

Bit of a noob on the MMOPRG (?) front, does that mean its only multiplayer, [no SP?]

It appears quite a complex game, whats the aim of the game?

Also understand ,you have to pay to play?

i work full time and have an 11 month old boy and thouroughly enjoy playing, i have a lv 60 warrior and a lv 40 priest. the aim is to achieve lv 60, soon to be lv 70 with new addon game called The Burning Crusade. whilst leveling you aim to become exalted with certain sections of the two islands of the world, this rep means you can get purple items which are fairly easily aquired. there is a flip side you can PVP which is battle grounds or pvp servers. It all depends on your game style. im not in to role play but if you are you an play on a role playing server.

there are differing aims in this game for all, i play with my guild and mates in dungeons im not a big pvp fan, and i aim to get the nicest gear i can for my character thus being better at future raids because of my higher specced gear.

ive been to molten core, black wing lair and have these on farm now its time for Nax which im really looking forward too.

it is multi player only but in a way thats what makes this game excellent.

im not coming accross as too much of a fan boy hopefully. but i do indeed enjoy the game play.

i guess i play for 7 hours a week atm but i find that keeps me happy. i know someone who pulls 70+ hours a week which is plain daft.

Depends on your personality.
I'm a competitive person, and wanted to be "better than" the other players. To be "better" i needed to have all the best equipment etc, and to have that... you must spend a truck load of time going to instances etc.
I believe that equation might change with the expansion comes out.

If you just want to have a casual play and enjoy what the world of Azeroth has to offer, and you are strong enough to resist getting sucked in too hard, then you will have a great time.

Well wow is about the only MMORPG where playing SP you can reach the level cap faster than with groups. Up to you. Never played a MMORPG before you'll think it is holy grail of computer gaming. Until you come to the sudden realisation - how quickly you come to this realisation varies from days to months - that its just a kiddy filled grindfest.

I remember someone saying ages ago here saying, "play a mmorpg until you get bored or just cant put up with the changes anymore". Just been on the realm forums and seen all the top raiding guild have disbanded. All those people that spent months raiding now have gear thats worthless.

Give the free trial a go. There's a monthly fee because it costs a small fortune to run servers to host the world, employ technicians and service staff, retain programmers to do new content and squash bugs, rent bandwidth and so on.

It is very complex, but it leads you into it very gently. You can play very casually if you want, in mmo games I generally get bored in the mid level 30's when the levelling slows down, and just start another character. The world is so big that you could just spend your time exploring, there's lots of hidden areas and out of the way things to find.

Then, when you realise that it's the best game in the world, spoilt by the fact that it's full of loud mouth, ignorant pre teens, come play EQ2 instead :D

when i used to play it, getting to lvl 60 was fun but then I just couldn't put in enough time to raid, and pvp just got boring for me after that, so i stopped.

That is exactly how it panned out for me too. Although my guild are not strict when it comes to raids you soon egt left behind equipment, and therefore usually are left at the back of any raid queues.

Also the fact that you have to do the same series of quests with Alts made them unappealing.

Thought it was too easy and kiddyfied (not real word I know:)) for me.

I played the game for about 13 months, put in on average 4-5hrs per day, had a couple of level 60's, and plenty of other chars varying in level. It got to the stage where I needed to raid, or grind to improve my character. After countless runs of the same dungeon trying to get a piece that had a 2% drop rate or something equally daft I just got furious with the fact that when push comes to shove.... No matter how good you are at the game, and no matter how much you carry another person through a dungeon, when items drop at the end the chance of you getting it is based on either luck (rolling for items) or how much time you spend in the game (accruing points to bid for items). That, in all honesty, is utter rubbish. It encourages to sink your entire life into the game to accrue points to bid for rare items when on raids.

You could be a complete retard when it came to playing, and if 39 people constantly carry you through raids, as long as you're always there, you'll always have more points to bid for things. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. I don't play anymore because of this.

I don't like the community around WOW as its very very much younger than the one I play atm (eve online)
also, theres not enough real PVP with losses.

I Started playing WoW, was in a great guild with loads of mates, and still got bored at level 35 and stopped playing. I couldn't ever really spend more than an hour in a sitting playing it due to other stuff going on, and I found that you really can't get anywhere in that kind of time. Even the low end instances like RFC can take longer than that, and most of the quests take longer than that too, which means that you have to spend either a hefty chunk of time online or just grind to gain levels, no fun at all.

And yes, the community can leave a lot to be desired. Having a lvl 60 tier 3 rogue camp your corpse for no apparent reason is great fun. What's even more fun is being told to 'cry more' and 'learn to play' when you ask anyone else in the zone to help you out.

Apparently the burning crusade addon gives more content to people who can't spend hours online at a time. But quite frankly I don't think I'll be giving it the time of day.

Like most I played it casually. And up to L60 its great. But unless you are single and unemployed their arent enough hours in the day to play this at the top end.

I wouldnt waste your money. If you are you can buy my charactor off me as I never plan on using again.

Image putting all that time into a character then you just play because youve put the time in.

You can spend about 2 to 6 hours doing a raid and then maybe get a sword or pair of boots out of it that are about 5% better than the ones you have lol

Free trial is the way to go if you are but the early stages are the best.

I would say theres enough for everyone, yes.

Unfortunatly you do get the people on forums like this who were once sucked in and couldnt control themselves and are now on a mission of their own trying to convince people not to play. Although I can see the extremely addictive nature of the game to somebody with an addicitive personality wiling to sacrafice their life, I do feel the game has enough to offer to the casual.

The new PvP system is a great addition, whereas before you had to grind your way to rank 14 via super human means and tight time restraints, now you could grind your rank 14 armor and weapons over a year if you wanted to. Also the grind to 70 in BC and all the new 5/10 man instances with different difficulty levels should be enough to keep the not so hardcore player interested for a very long time.

I tried playin it but it takes up too much damn time. You have to forget about the real world if you want to get far in WOW

However, it IS a good game - better than any other online RPG i know of

***.

it does really depend. In my experience, its those who started when servers were initially released that were competing with players there from the start, be it for pvp, or to have the best gear - i did it myself.

joining the game late means that whole competiteveness (sp :S) isn't so much of a prospect, at least imho.

re: the life-destroying aspect - yes it can be consuming. i played 12 ish hours a day for about a year, if not a little over, but i was a student at the time. Having left uni now and started full time employment, i've pretty much been forced to stop - unless i'm able to raid 5 nights a week, pve seems pointless, because you'll never keep at the top. in my experience, those who do play 12 hours a day give or take a few, are either unemployed/students/school kids/college etc. If you have a full time job, you have to draw the line somewhere.

go for it imo - its a great game. i've got oblivion/fear/hitman 2/CoH and BF 2 sitting next to me now (<3 christmas), and im still tempted to [No swearing - Minstadave] it all and reroll priest for TBC :D

you've never played EVE then.

MMORPGs are a completely different gaming experience.

If you do not have a high degree of self-discipline then I would advise you to leave them well alone. They will eat up your life. I have played Lineage II for about 2 1/2 years and at the height of my addiction I was playing 6 hours a day during the week (after work) and 18 hours a day at weekends.

I haven't played WoW but I understand that it is somewhat easier to level characters than in L2. These games can seem more like a job if you let them.

For the higher content you will find that you have to team up with others to get things done.

I am gradually weaning myself off of L2 and hope to see the sun/daylight again this coming spring. ;)

I wasnt saying dont play it. I enjoyed it. But it is certainly not for the casual gamer. You cant play this game without putting in the hours if you want to get half decent gear. Surely you cant deny that?

A good part of the game you can be waiting and waiting for someone to join a raid then after about an hour of waiting, you get halfway through and they leave lol.

Getting to L70 would be fun but then you get the same problem as L60 did as the limit. I would say you need at least 3 hours to play this.

I'm going to disagree..I'm a casual gamer (5-6 hours a week) and I love it still.I've been playing since beta too.It all depends what you want from the game.Want all the best gear? Yes you'll need to put the hours in.But that isn't important to me.I play regularly with some top people and it's that that keeps me coming back.

It's a grind if you make it a grind..it's a time-sink if you allow it to be..it's annoyingly full of kiddies if you let them get to you.

The game has a lot to offer the new MMO players..and is arguably the easiest to get into with immediate rewards.I've tried EVE,EQ2,EQ1,City of Heroes/Villains,and Guildwars.None grabbed me the way WoW did.I'd wholeheartedly recommend it,especially if you can group regularly with good people.
