Is XP viable for HTPC ?

Banter is good.

I'm planning to use this HTPC as a retro arcade machine.
Also as a second computer in general, sometimes my family requires another machine.
Wife has to do some work online when i'm on with mine - hilarity ensues (no, not really)...

In general i'm getting an impression that i wont be able to run xp AND linux due to certain tasks and compatibility issues. So far W7 ticks all boxes, except for space eating habits... 120gb is not a lot by any measure...

Any Windows specific programmes that you want to run? I'll search around for Linux equivalents/WINE compatibility if you want.

Regardless, you could slipstream Winodws 7 to your hearts content, removing stuff that you don't need. :)

You should be fine, but bear in mind that if you're running it as a server too, Win XP often suffers unless you set it to prioritise background services, and if you do that, then programs being run locally will suffer.

For an HTPC, personally, I'd go Linux!

Does XP have DXVA compatibility? I can't remember now, if not I'd stick to W7

It doesn't as far as I'm aware.

I think it also has issues with DTS, again from vague memory.

Openelec is a great alternative - Boots straight from removable media. Yes it's Linux but it just boots up into XBMC. Obviously if you have other needs of your PC then this isn't for you.
