Isn't 10240 Kbps pretty bad for a server?

The standard speed I see when it comes to co-location or dedicated servers is 10240 Kbps (a "10Mb pipe").

Surely that means that two of me (I'm on an 8Mb line) downloading from the server simultaneously would be sucking up all of its bandwidth?

If that's true, isn't that completely rubbish? Or am I misunderstanding something to do with server connection speeds?
 
Standard is a 100mbit port unless you're looking at budget servers which will more likely than be on a 10mbit port.

So yes, 2 of you downloading at once would only get 5mbit each.

The alternative is the hosting company give you a 100mbit port and a limit of 3Tb (=10mbit/sec) but then they'll have folk who blast out 100mbit/sec and essentially abuse the network. eg filesharing, and so on. Giving only a 10mbit port is a form of protection but also a reason to upgrade to a faster port - extreme budget dedis must be run on very thin margins :)

That's far from being the 'standard'. Sounds like you're looking at the wrong providers...

You should be looking for a 100mbit port as standard.
 
What do you think the minimum spend is to get a server on a 100Mb port?

I am looking for a game server (30 people) but would have thought 10Mb wouldn't be enough for that..?

I have only started looking as of today, and I am looking at budget servers, which probably explains why I saw 10240Kbps as standard. My boss was talking about co-lo pricing on a 10Mb pipe, I think I should explain to him that two people (or one, even) on a decent connection will max that out!

At the budget end of the dedicated server market you have Poundhost, Rapidswitch and UK2 who do servers on 100mbit ports for around £50 a month. :)
 
Thanks Daz :) Can you vouch for any of them? They all look quite good, specifically RapidSwitch's cheapest one. Although "Awesome network" on the homepage puts me off somewhat... UK2 definitely seem the most professional.
