...properly

Get the Royal Tournament back in action and lets have proper Field Gun races again!!(I know field gun has happened since but it isn't a proper sport outisde Royal Tournament)

Ok yes the country is broke, ok yes the populace is apathetic; but hell when I was a kid it was a great day out and a brilliant showcase for what as Britain we can do regardless of the political circumstances. Proper tubthumping (because even false pride is better than no pride)

/Oh go I'm drunk and it was my bedreadlocked Bajan (someone from Barbados!) mate who reminded me of the Royal Tournament & the Field Gun Races and how 'outsiders' saw it as the Great part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain.

*I'll regret this post when I get up in a couple of hours :(

**Edit
I have to say I'm biased because I have a friend who has 3 & 1/2 fingers on his left hand because he lost the wheel pin on the run home and used his index finger as a replacement

**2nd Edit (and I really should let the sleeping dog lie!)
Sod it, cos it's my home town and our Navy consists of a yaught and a rotting rowing boat and I have a tear in my eye:(

Hearts Of Oak
Come, cheer up, my lads, 'tis to glory we steer,
To add something more to this wonderful year;
To honour we call you, as freemen not slaves,
For who are so free as the sons of the waves?

Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men,
we always are ready; Steady, boys, steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

We never see the French but we wish them to stay,
They always see us and they wish us away;
If they run, we will follow, we will drive them ashore,
And if they won't fight, we can do no more.

Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men,
we always are ready; Steady, boys, steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

They swear they'll invade us, these terrible foes,
They frighten our women, our children and beaus,
But should their flat bottoms in darkness get o'er,
Still Britons they'll find to receive them on shore.

Heart of oak are our ships, heart of oak are our men,
we always are ready; Steady, boys, steady!
We'll fight and we'll conquer again and again.

Britannia triumphant, her ships sweep the sea,
Her standard is Justice—her watchword, 'be free.'
Then cheer up, my lads, with one heart let us sing,
Our soldiers, our sailors, our statesmen, and king

-You can also sing Jolly tars are men instead of Heart of oak are our men

I prefer the original version I've given :p \o/

If that was brought back today health and safety would have a field day in this PC day and age but muchos respect for the guys that did it!

Use to go to the RT all the time when I was younger as I was in the Marine Cadets. God that was a long time ago 32+ years

I watched the video. It didn't make sense. Need to get a field gun from A to B? Big wall in the way?

Field gun?

Big wall?

Field Gun?

I hope you see where I'm going with this.

Might be a good idea to bring it back, best we learn how to move and assemble them as the way our armed forces are going we might only have 19th century cannons to fight with soon :D

We have inter service field gun competitions all the time, just not on TV anymore :(

I've seen some pretty bad injuries before

And with all the defense cuts its probably not such a great idea to go and make field guns more dangerous else we'll have less capable servicemen+woman who are claiming some nice little wads of insurance...

I know more people who have got injured playing football/rugby.

I think I've got an inkling, I like this plan although I fear it slightly loses some of the skill in the physical aspect if your immediate strategy is to go straight through it.

I know more people who have got injured playing football/rugby.

How many people do you know that play football/rugby compared to those who do field gun competitions? Just thinking if you know 5 people who do the field gun competitions and 3 get injured then in percentage terms (ignoring small sample size for a second) it's proportionally more dangerous than if you know 100 people who play football/rugby and 10 of them get injured.

They're a remarkably impressive display of teamwork and strength though, I certainly used to enjoy the displays on TV.

Good strategy, though. Shows initiative.

I'd agree that this sort of run is much more dangerous than rugby or football.

Agreed.

I'm a member of the forces, and I'm one of those football injuries :)
One of the papers would get on the MoD's back if field gun started up and people started losing fingers inevitably, lets face it.

Sorry to bring it up again.

Since today HMS Ark Royal sailed into her home port for the last time today:( :( (rightly or wrongly but that is not up for debate here) I had to find something to cheer me up and here I found the the end of the series from '97 which gave Pompey it's first series win in 10 years \o/ (I remember it making the front pages of the Portsmouth News :D) but I have to say in this video you really can see the team work and how hard it is on the competitors.

-Come, cheer up, my lads 'tis to glory we steer
