I'm thinking of getting an electric razor. I had a cheap one years and ago and it was, frankly, rubbish. What can I look at to avoid the same mistake? How much do I need to spend to get a half decent razor?

i bought one of those philips coolskin ones. It gives a really close shave, plus its waterproof so i can shave in the shower.

I have one of those too, but find it takes just as long to use a normal razor.

Braun dry shave (followed by some moisturiser) is much quicker (though not as close a shave).

I bought a Philips one for £30 thinking it would be crap but would do for when I really couldn't be arsed with a wet shave, it's surprisingly good :)

Teutontechnik 4 life! :D

They really are the most amazing razors. Forget all that "multi-blade" ********; you only need one blade if it's a good 'un.

For a moment I thought you were going to say underwater :D

Anyway, I have been using a manual MACH3 for years now and it only hit me that I’m spending the good side of £10 on a pack of blades every time I need a refill and would be in fact better off buying an electric one.

Having never used an electric one before and not knowing anyone who does (whole family & friends use Mach3 or Wilkinson Swords!) do they last ages or do you need to get their blades changed as well?

Potentially SOLD!

Well I've only used it once, but it was a cleaner, easier shave with less irritation than the Mach3 I've been using. I'll let you know whether I still like it in a week or whether I'm swearing at it like a drunken sailor and bleeding like a stuck pig ;)

You still need to change blades on an electric razor every 6 - 18 months depending on hair/use. They generally do not cut the hair cleanly so you may find a higher degree of irritation whilst you get used to it. They normally work on a mashing/tearing effect of the mechanism.

Gillette make good blades, they are usually just a bit too thin now that they will break within 2 weeks use. Mach 3 was less prone to this problem I found. Not knowledgeable about wilkinson sword, but from personal preference found it worse than gillette stuff.

If you are happy to make a bit more of a ritual/time consuming then go for safety razor types and you could save money in the long run or at least have tried and know what it is like.

I plan to go that route once I have used up all my old blades.
