Halved squash balls are the classic.
The 20lb sub woofer I have is at shoulder height is on them. Your speakers do need to be heavy enough to squash out any inconstancy in the cut though.
Added a bit of felt to isolate the screws from the leg brackets and used the smaller chopping board for my Q-Acoustics 3020s and works fine. Still room for improvement but lifts the speakers up to more or less ear level which was what I was aiming for.
