ISP 3d monitors?

Hey, well I don't think I could put up with a TN pannel having used a 24" ISP now for almost 5 years so does anyone know if/when ISP 3d pannels would be about?

Hi there,

Unfortunately, IPS technology just isn't fast enough (at least in its current implementation) to provide the massive 120Hz refresh rate which 3D systems demand. Hence why we only see TN panels in 120Hz (3D) monitors, as they are so darn quick (but are lacking in other key areas compared to IPS). Hence I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for one - it is more likely that affordable OLED monitors (which will be capable of 3D and offer amazing image quality) will be on the market before you see a true 120Hz IPS.

If you do see a 120Hz IPS advertised, look into it closely and see if it is true 120Hz (if it does then it should also advertise it as "3D ready") as there are a few "120Hz" IPS monitors coming to the market that use the interpolation technology usually seen in HDTVs which isn't true 120Hz and won't work with 3D.

cmdr_andi has pretty much nailed it - the current technology just can't provide the responsiveness required (over a wide range of pixel transitions) for a smooth 120Hz performance. I wrote an article about this not too long ago which many people have found interesting but some also a little upsetting (perhaps). There are many people in a similar position to yourself who don't want to compromise one way (image quality) or the other (responsiveness) - but unless significant advances are made in IPS technology that is what we will have to do for the time being. As somebody who regularly uses various IPS, VA and TN based panels I become all too sensitive to differences between the panels (responsiveness and image quality) and I can completely see where you're coming from. There are plenty of TN panels out there that wouldn't make the grade for good 120Hz performance (this BX2440 I'm reviewing now, for example) and there are some IPS monitors that actually provide superior responsiveness to some TN panels. This situation does cause a bit of confusion and perhaps misconception regarding the issue of IPS as a suitable candidate for 120Hz technology. Furthermore there are TV technologies that provide '120Hz' technology (mainly using interpolation) and support 3D in various forms but these are designed to be viewed from further back than your average PC monitor so seemingly subtle issues with responsiveness aren't really such a problem.

Haha IPS*, rookie error.

Yeah I did suspect that TN panels were the only really viable technology but I don't understand how anyone can use a 24" TN panel. The shifting is horrible :/.

Out of curiosity, if I had a 3d tv could I use it to run pc games in 3d or is it different technology as I'm soon to be purchasing a 50" plasma and might get a 3d one due to them having the better 2d quality as well. Am undecided between the Panasonic G30 and GT30.

With a 3DTV you are able to hook it up to a PC via a HDMI 1.4 connection and use Nvidia's "3DTV Play" technology. However, due to the limitations of HDMI 1.4 bandwidth you can only run 3D content at 1080p@24Hz or 720P @60Hz.

In comparison, a 3D monitor using a dual-link DVI connection (which offers much more bandwidth than HDMI 1.4) can receive a 3D signal which is 1080@60Hz.

A 720p@60Hz 3D signal on a 3DTV would still look pretty good - since 3DTVs have some very good scaling engines and the TVs image quality will be a fair bit better than a TN monitor in many aspects - however it won't look as crisp as a true 1080p@60Hz signal which is available on a 3D monitor and you may have some issues with the lower responsiveness while in 3D mode.

I don't miss IPS when the monitor is in 3D, in 2D it's fairly horrible though and I wish I had a nice 27/30" IPS for the slower stuff.

:O few more years? I suspect it would be out of my price range by then as I'm guessing you'll need SLI and currently I want to do it now as I have a 480GTX and to get another is only £200. Where as if I had to upgrade my gpu + get another to sli + a monitor that will be expensive as its OLED. I suspect it would be near a £1000 just for 3d. Not worth it.

Ah well, maybe I will just get a TN panel. Shall see.
