ISP options, no phoneline desired

Hi guys,

About to move into a new place and, obviously, need a net connection. We would rather not have a phoneline as we wouldn't use it, but if it turns out cheaper we're happy to. I currently use Virgin and i'm reasonably happy with it, except the capping - which is annoying. Is there a better alternative at a similar or lower cost?

also, we may only be residents for 6 months, do any providers offer this?

I am not aware of many places that you can get Net without a phoneline, other then with Virgin.

I think there are a few Wireless ISP's, where your actual Net connection is wireless, not just a Wireless Router on the end of a DSL connection, but the coverage is pretty limited.

maybe one of those 3g dongles will easier?

I'm sure there is an ISP that does 6 or contracts, can't think who it is though

But the phone line will almost certainly have to be on a 12 month contract and as said nearly all internet connections will require a phone line

and there's 3 us, should i say, so it needs to be fundamentally cabled really. hmm.. might just have to go with cable :*( boo!

I was about to post exactly the same thread lol. Just moved into a new flat and am hoping someone can recommend an isp other than Virgin who don't need a phone line too.

With a phone line tho, Be/O2 do a 3 month contract, but you pay a bit extra for it (£20 a month for Be).

Even if you are on an LLU (Be/O2 for instance) service you still need a line installed by BT, this is something they will charge you for (£125 if its a new line, much less if it is just a reconnection).

There are plenty of ADSL ISPs to choose from and the quality of service you get will depend ultimately on what you pay for.

It is also worth bearing in mind that the speed you're going to get from ADSL will also depend on how far from your exchange you are and the quality if your phone line.

If it is available surely the three of you could split the cost of the 50Mbit package from VM, at the moment they don't cap that service (damn right too if you ask me at £50 a month!) as bear in mind a BT line is going to cost you £10.50 / month add to that the £20-35 for a decent ISP and the difference gets smaller than you think.

I think if you sign up through Quidco at the moment they are also offering a decent cashback deal.

Also last time I was speaking to sky if you didnt already have a landline they said they would subsidise the £125 install fee with a £125 credit to your sky bill.

might be worth looking into if you nab a small tv pack.

with a landline install tho your tied to a 12 month contract afaik, might be able to go thru home movers (the HORROR!) if you need to move in 6month tho.
