isp ping hell

recently my ping in games suddenly goes threw the roof i'm running an netgear dg834gt on aol and its terrible is there anything i can do or do just change isp?

Netgear and AOL is probably the worst combination for any internetings. There are people who will disagree but I fully stand by that comment.

Get a Linksys router and change ISP when you get a chance.

I disagree, Netgears are one of the better router manufacturers out there - this is more than likely an ISP issue.

Try adjusting the MTU Size from 1450/1458 to 1400 in the 'WAN Setup' section in your router.

only trouble witth dropping it from 1450 - 1400 is that msn stops working

The only problem I have ever had with any of my netgear devices is that my old netgear router didn't cope to well with torrents, it would have problems with the number of connections, and even after the torrent client closed the router would keep the uPnP port open for some reason which would lag the network.

When not using torrents the netgear router was perfectly fine.

That said though, my linksys wrt54gl is a much better router with tomato on it that my netgear router ever was, it beats it in all aspects.

Linksys stuff with their own firmware used to be terrible!! Not too sure what thir like now but Netgear are generally very good. I would first make sure no other apps (torrents, xfire etc) are using the net which could cause the dodgy ping.

Like I said, I stand by my comment that Netgear sucks nuts. Obviously people will have different views based on personal experiences I exclusively use Linksys equipment in client sites. Plug in, configure and forget.

Netgear equipment on the other hand has made me lots of money, so I guess they serve a purpose!

Netgear ain't that bad, Belkin on the other hand is a whole different story.

Im in the same boat dude. Its not AOL. Your actually with talk talk and there servers suck. I have complained and complained and now have totally given up. After about 10.30 at night if i restart my router then my ping is decent but worthless before 10pm.

Phone up AOL and get them to switch you from interleaved to fastpath.
If they wont switch you to fastpath ask them to reduce you interleaved depth/delay.
They might not do this if you have an unstable line.

It'll be congestion or how the traffic shaping works on their servers, as posted above - change ISP asap, theres probably more chance of pigs flying than them admitting an issue (after you've done multiple laps round indian call centres) and resolving it to your satisfaction.

I've just got to this stage, but now looking for a new proper ISP is harder than I thought.

I am used to "unlimited" so GB per month feels very restrictive. I generally play ARMAII 4 nights a week.

I live in a village a distance from the exchange and the max my line really supports is 2 meg.

I have seen ADSL24 mentioned and they seem to have a quick migration service. Any comments on them?
