Hi,

could anybody recommend a decent ISP specifically for gaming? I have just moved into a flatshare and they have a virgin media package. The broadband is only 2MB. I find it difficult to play any games online when the household are constantly facebooking or downloading stuff. So pretty sick of this now so decided to look into getting my own line set up. I'm in the wandsworth area of South London. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many Thanks for any replies

Thanks for your reply mate,

it appears there are quite a few in the area:

BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
BT Wholesale SDSL
AOL LLU
O2 / Be LLU
Bulldog LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Pipex LLU
Tiscali LLU
Tiscali TV (via Tiscali LLU)
Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo)
Urban Wimax
Virgin Media (Cable)

So you would suggest the O2/BE LLU? what is the deal with this local loop unbunddling, I must confess I don't knkow anything about it.

Cheers

Hmm interesting thought, will have to have a chin wag with my landlord as it is in his name.Any Idea on costings for a second line? maybe a one off set up fee?

would save on line rental......which is a plus.

Cheers

If you look on here you can get 20mbit o2 for £7.50/month, add on your line rental (paperless billing discount included) and that's another £10.50/month.

So for £18/month you've got 20mbit internet (assuming you're not too far from the exchange - what does samknows say?). With no annoying STM/usage caps and double the upload speed of cable.

If you're far away from the exchange then cable might be a better option however (if you absolutely *have* to have 20mbit). In the past, VM have been funny about installing two cable connections to the same premises...I'm not sure if they've changed their tune about that.

LLU is basically a method the ISP can use to not have to go through BT's equipment as much. As such, they save money on the bandwidth and can offer different speed services (e.g. ADSL2+/24mbit ADSL rather than just 8mbit). Usually the cheaper bandwidth costs for them translate into more relaxed usage limits/caps too.

Hi Aekeron,

thanks for your detailed reply. What you say about VM seems to ring a bell as when I moved in the landlord said something about them being 'funny' about installing two cable points in the house. So looks like I will be looking into O2.
It sounds pretty good to be honest. Yeah one of the forum members workso for O2 or something I saw that in an earlier thread. I wonder how many peeps he can actually place on that list.

I would be happy with 8mb if thats all I can get, but 20mb would be a bit special.

Cheers for your help Aekeron and everyone else who has replied.

Hi,

just a quick update. I went with O2 in the end, I'am very happy with them.
Ordered on saturday afternoon, up and running the following friday. Ordered an 8mb line, currently getting 10mb. Great ping times even at peak times. I was texted the progress of my order all the way through. My router was despatched on the sunday and was with me on the tuesday. I was always a BT customer but I'am uber pleased with the O2 service so far. Thanks again Aekeron.
