Just going through the process of ordering broadband and am having a 'mare. Think Nildram is the favourite at the moment. Checked out Plus.Net too as they got a great writeup in Which? magazine but customer reviews on ispreview.co.uk are dire!

Anyway, I've just checked out my line online and get the following;

The maximum speed of your line is indicated to be 1024Kbps
...due to the length of your line the 1Mbps service may require an engineer visit who will, where possible, supply the broadband service. Our initial test on your line indicates that it is VERY UNLIKELY your line will support a reliable broadband service, with current technology.

As-the-crow-flies I'm only 0.8 of a mile away from the exchange (I do realise that the line won't go direct :) ). However a mate who lives 2.5 miles as-the-crow-flies from the exchange is on 2Mb!!! What gives???

Dave

PS - edit - before anyone suggests, there is no cable in the area and the exhange is NOT LLU.

I'm with plus.net and I think they're very good. I don't know much about customer service because I never have to get in touch with them, as I've never had any problems.

I do know that a lot of customers moan on the forums about the way that plus.net handle the free speed upgrades. Everyone saying they should be first and when will it happen. I'm quite content to sit and wait until I get it instead of moaning.

A lot of people moan about the usage restrictions, which I think currently allow you to download 30GB in a month. That's if you're on one of the premium packages. You'd have to be downloading a lot to get past that.

Just order ADSL MAX and see what you get :) You will no doubt get a reasonable rate if you are physically that close to the exchange, the line cant be that long.

My line says its only good for 512kbs, but im on 4.4mb, ignore it its the original system I think.

Just accept what you are given, don't have that much choice really, no ISP will be able to offer you above what the line can give.

Im with Zen for the record, 3 years without a minutes downtime. :)

How does the Broadband "Guestimator" work?

You see I've moved into a house where the line was existing with the old residents number, and so I have a new BT provision (activated today). I'm thinking that perhaps my newly allocated number was in use miles away and the location information hasn't been updated - how to they get their LOCATION and DISTANCE information for that line?

It takes an "educated" guess based on planning records to work with the limits that are set. As ever, the contents of a database for millions of lines aren't guaranteed.

Quite possibly.

So they WILL be out of date then...? It has only been switched on today. I wonder if there is any way to find out where BT "thinks" the line is located?

There'll be plenty of planning records for the pair you've got, it's just debatable if the database is working with them.

Best you'll get is what exchange it's on.
