Basically, I have been with orange (Bad move, I know) for 12 months now so my contract is up. I can change providers.

What ISP would be best for me?

I live about 2km from the exchange (i think) and websites say my max will be something like 6meg on ADSL2+ (Be)

"BT phone number ***** ******
We've estimated that your maximum download speed is 6 meg .This is based on information BT gave us about your BT line. Actual download speeds depend on different things, like the distance between your telephone exchange and your home, or the quality of your BT line. We'll work with what's there and always give you the fastest speed we can, depending on your chosen package. Even then, your broadband speed might vary from time to time."

However, i do live in a cabled area, and was also looking at VMs 20meg.

How frequent are the caps and how much?

Which ISP would be best for gaming/downloading?

If you are about 2km then you should get a reasonable speed, however VM will probably be better again as you tend to get the max speed unless capped. They would be better for gaming as well. You can download a bit but if you are a heavy downloader, you'll have to do it outside 'peak' times if you want the top speed.

Their traffic policy is here - http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

Cable is the best however if you want value look at 02.
