Hi all,

Came on my PC this morning to check a few things and when I went to shut it down there was one update for windows 7 so it installed and then the PC shut down.

Came back to my PC several hours later and now I have wavy lines all over my PC like my graphics card has died. Surely it has something to do with the windows update?

My gpu is water cooled and is a 4870x2 running the latest drivers. In control panel it won't allow me to uninstall the latest windows update.

Can someone please advise?

Well just to update:

I tried a system restore to go back 2 days and then when it rebooted after the windows loading logo all I had was a black screen. Tried several restarts and still the same. I then booted up in safe mode and it was fine, no wavy lines just a normal screen. So I decided to go forward with a system restore to today again. Then rebooted and again black screen. So by this time I just turned it off and at the wall also. Came back to it 30 mins later and booted up straight into windows all fine, like nothing has happend. Tried several restarts and all was fine again.

What the hell is going off?

My advice would be to turn off auto updates, and change it to "check for updates but let me chose what to download and install"

Sounds like windows installed the Microsoft driver for your card via the update and your system didn't like it.

It was a windows security update though. Nothing to do with gpu drivers. I did, however, update my graphics card drivers a few days back but my system has been fine. I just can't work out what has gone wrong.

Very weird. Thanks anyway mate.

Probably a coincidence. I would also be thinking hardware issue if the problem arrived and disappeared after the PC had been switched off for more than a few moments.

Yeah I was thinking that also. Will just have to monitor it. It's not as simple as taking bits out though as its all under water.

Out of interest do people generally do the recommended updates as well? I've always just done the 'Important' list unless I specifically had an issue...

I do the majority of them. PC is absolutely fine now. I'm completely stumped and left worried that something else might happen again.

Beginning to think that it may be a fault with my monitor. Turned PC on last night and same thing happened again. Blue / yellow coloured lines all over my screen. This time instead of messing around with the PC I just turned the monitor off and then back on. Fixed it!

My monitor is the NEC 24WMGX3. I think it's 3 year warranty with them. Had it for 2 years.

Sounds like the monitor is on its way out. Anyone else agree?
