Issue RDP'ing into HTPC - assistance required!

Hi guys,

I'm having a few issues with remote connecting to my HTPC downstairs.

Firstly, both are on a wired network.

My host PC spec is:
i3 530
8GB RAM
1GB GTX 460

My HTPC spec is:
AMD LIano A6-3500 2.1GHz
4GB RAM
OCZ Agility 3 SSD

So I remote connect in, and it runs like a dog. Firstly, the desktop loads slowly in block chunks, left to right. Minimising/restoring windows takes an age and is very slow, and moving around/doing anything is a nightmare.

First thing I tried doing is changing the RDP settings. Turned Colors down to 15bit, unticked everything under Experience. But it still runs like crap (and now looks like crap too!)

Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks,
Chris.

That does sound exactly like what it does when it's going over a slow internet connection, but if you've turned everything down already I would have thought it would be ok.

Failing that try TeamViewer (in the options you probably have to enable direct IP connection, for use on LANs). The bonus is you're not locked out of the media PC when you connect (always an annoyance with RDP).

I'm on 50meg, and it is wired via a powerline adapter. Internet speed on both is circa 50MB. How else can I test the connection 'between them'?

I'd like to try and avoid TeamViewer if possible. In theory, terminal services should be perfect :(

Always something!

Share a file on one of the machines and try and download it from the other. Your internet speed should have nothing to do with this bit.

Hi guys,

Been investigating this further this evening. I have 3 PC's on the LAN.

PC1 (Host) & PC2 and connected via cable to my Virgin SuperHub, PC3 (HTPC) is connected to the SuperHub via powerline.

I have been using LAN Speed Test to check connection. If I try sharing a 50MB file between PC1 and PC2 (both ways) I get something like 400MBps. If I try doing the same between either PC1 or PC2 and PC3...the program crashes and I don't get a result lol.

What could be causing this? As I said previously, the internet speed on PC3 is perfect. How can the fact its via powerline affect the LAN speed?

Yes, if you could move PC 1 or 2 to where PC 3 is then it will definitely point the issue at either the poweline plugs or at the PC.

Since you can download at full speed from the internet, I'm suspecting a PC settings issue on PC 3 but it's a good idea to rule out the adapters first.

To rule them out

Get the pc's that are usually connected via powerline and connect them via ethernet to the router (I realise this is probably a pita)

try a pathping between the two PCs (or get winmtr) to check for packet loss.

then check the NIC settings on the PCs and port settings on the router/switch for speed, duplex and jumbo frames and manually set them to all be the same.

and download the latest TS client.
