Issue with 5850.

if these cards are dud then i hate to say it, nvidia are the best (dont call me fanboy!), this is the first ati card ive had, all nvidia cards ive had have been flawless.

i also thought it was just Sapphire cards, but seems to be others too.

Mine's a Gigabyte...

Hi hominid,

I too have the same issue, but I have to power cycle about 8 or 9 times before it works, but once it works it's perfectly fine until I power off again, it even survives reboots, the problem only occurs when I power off completely.

I suspect it's an Asus mobo issue, as I have a P5N-E SLI, and looking on the intraweb many Asus users are experiencing the same issue.

On a good note, just had mine overclocked to 850mhz core on default vcore, and it ran furmark quite happily for some time. Temp were 86c-88c with auto fan, which maxed out at 44%.

All in all I'm quite happy to live with the boot issue as I'm gonna be upgrading to an i5/7 soon anyway (E6420 @ 3.2ghz currently).

Thanks for the reply :)

It's odd that it was ok for the first week or so and has only just started to do it, so not 100% sure what's going on. It's got a 1 year warrentee so I can live with it for a bit to see if things develope further.

I did a test overclock and mine goes to at least 925MHz on stock volts, but get a bit warm for my taste with furmark - I chickened out at that point, so it's a good clocker.

The only other thing I can check is to see if my CPU overclock somehow is causing it so I'm going reset the mobo to defaults tonight in order to see how it goes in the morning. I might even flash the bios to something newer although it doesn't even look like anything relevant has been added for ages. Those are the only things I can think of.

mine ain't a 5XXX series but, when i boot pc up at any point, the fan on the card spins at 100% for 1-2 seconds then goes back down to what i believe is (auto). nothing weird, i just thought it was the time taken by the mobo to take control over the card.

yeah thats normal, they all do that, so nothing to worry about. :)

Theres definitely something wrong with these 5850's (unless this is normal for them), as i thought mine was a goner today.

Switched on, took about 10 seconds or so to start loading, fan on the card went 100% for a split second or so (as is normal), hard-drives kicked in as normal as well, then instead of the post screen appearing and booting, for some reason it just seemed to hold itself for about 5-10 seconds (monitor LED going off/on, black screen), before the post screen appeared and it began to load, very odd.

ive never had that, or fans spinning up to 100%, just the odd driver stopped error - aswell as not been able to run the drivers off the ati site, just off the cd.

i also manually changed the pci-e clock in the bios to 100mhz which seems to of helped a bit.

I had a 8800GT mate, and this problem occured for almost 2 weeks non stop with my P5N-E SLI. This eventualy led to my 8800GT failing to completly work. So now im running my computer on a 9500GT...lol. Can barely play games, only chess. This motherboard as far as i know sucks a lot of horse ****, if its doing it for you also. I recommend not screwing up your graphics card, i dont even know how to fix this problem. This will probably end up ruining my 9500GT which isnt much of a problem, as im getting a new graphics card in 3 weeks or so. What i am worried about is, if this problem persists with this motherboard, will it continue to ruin all the cards that i put in it?

as i have mentioned, i also had that p5n-e sli and its the most crap piece of motherboard i have had, you can get so much better then that.

I'm not trolling but why are you guys buying shiney new cards? What new games are you guys playing them with?

I mean I bought a 260GTX and kinda wasted me money as it still couldn't boost Arma 2 past 20-50fps.

I'm back playing Tf2, CSS, L4D, am I missing something? I need an excuse for i5 and or a shiney 5770 or summit :)

What new games hit the stores the next 3 months to warrant i5/ new G card?

EDIT: Todays switch on, was like this :-

Well somethings iffy here, switched on today, and my post screen and the starting windows screen, were just snowy, you know that snowy you get when you don't have a Tv aerial in, but was coloured, but then the welcome screen came on as normal, and its loaded fine.

Did a restart to see if it did it again, but nope fine, so now im wondering, if its something to do with a cold boot with these cards, as i can switch off, restart loads of times without prob during the day, its only giving me probs when i leave it off all night.

Im giving it till next weekend, anymore iffyness its going back for a refund.

Update on my machine.

I reset it to factory defaults in the bios and switched it off, this morning I turn it on and it boots first time. So the inference to be made is that something in my overclock was screwing with the 5850. It also could be a fluke so I'll reset it again tonight and see how it is again tomorrow.

I've had a 4850 in the machine for nearly a year before with no issue with the settings I used, and also the 5850 was ok for a week or more before. I still don't get how it can go from being fine to having issues with out me changing a thing.

Anyway it looks like I can fix the issues with some motherboard tweaking so I'm not worried atm - time will tell.

Hope you can finally get it sorted, im going to have to see whats buggered on mine, as i planted a screwdriver through my mobo yesterday when trying to get the 4870 out, couldn't get the white clip on the end of the PCI-E down to get it out (as was only a smidge sticking out, and couldn't get me hand down due to other cards in the way), so stupid me thought about pressing it down with a screwdriver, but slipped, snapped the clip off, and screwdriver straight into the board (or so i thought, as i checked it all over and not a mark/gouge could be seen), so buggers knows, and its been running perfectly fine, been hammering games and everything, so it may just be something to do with being off for hrs (cold boot) :D

I guess if the screen only goes dodgy before windows loads on a cold boot, then i can live with that, just ave to keep an eye on it. :p
