Issue with AMD FX-4130 Black Edition/ BIOS?

Hey guys,

For a while I've been using my AMD FX-4130 Black Edition processor and my system hasn't been running as well as I think it should. The clock speed should be 3.8GHz when needed, but it only ever seems to run at 2.8GHz, even if I'm doing something pretty intensive like playing CIV 5. I've been using CPU-Z and CoreTemp to monitor this. I tried using Catalyst control centre to overclock it to 3.8GHz but it was unstable and although it didn't crash my system it wouldn't run games properly.

Can anyone help get my processor working how it should? I'm planning on upgrading my graphics card and would like my system working at peak performance before then.

Here's the first section from DXDiag in case you want it

Ah good ol' FX CPUs with their throttling eh?

From what I remember those Gigabyte boards don't have APM? You may need a BIOS update or the alpha one kicking around to disable this.
However in the mean time try turning off C1e, C6 and cool n' quiet to see if this alleviates the issue.

Oh and download core parking and run that, that may also help you out.

Ok, I've made sure that none of the cores are parked but the max core speed is till at 2.8GHz. I'm not sure what C1e, C6 or cool n' quiet refer to :D Also if I were to need to update the bios you'd probably need to tell me what to do

Should have been clearer my apologies :)

Anyhow when the PC is booting up keep pressing the del till it boots into the BIOS.

From here we can disable those "states" and also check whether the CPU is running at the correct frequency too.

First enter MB intelligent tweaker, the first entry should be the clock ratio make sure that's set at 3800mhz and disbale core performance boost, it may be also be called turbo.

Then enter advanced BIOS features and disable C1e, C6, cool n quiet, enhanced halt state and APM if you have these features.
Then save and exit and restart.

Not a problem, my knowledge is a little patchy :) I've done what you said, and according to CPU-Z it's running at 3.8GHz, should I check that it's stable in any way?

You can if you want I'd download HWinfo and run intel burn test, the temps might get a bit high if your using the stock cooler though.

Glad that your issue is sorted though :)

I ran skyrim for a bit and my PC just shut down, I noticed that my clock rate was 3.82 (I set the multiplier to 19 and it said it was 3.8 in the BIOS) so I set it to 3.7 in the BIOS. I ran Intel burn test on high and it failed on the second run through, any ideas what I should do?

Sorry been away from this for a while, it appears it's auto shutdown with either not enough volts or too high of temps.

What was the temps like while running intel burn test?

Highest was 34 degrees, and I have a 550W power supply

Wooo AMD's dodgy temp sensors in full force once again. I'm unsure what cooler you're using so I would be a little weary about upping the voltage.

I would suggest keep dropping the multi, however if you have an after market cooler you could OC the CPU a little, I would be hesitant about OCing too much as the VRMs don't have heatsinks and it only has a 4+1 power phase.
