Issue with graphics card

Hi,
I've had a AMD Radeon HD 6870 graphics card in my PC for several months and have been experiencing a certain issue in all high spec games.

I get the 'AMD driver has stopped responding and has successfully recovered' error message. While in game I will get a 2-3 second frozen screen, the screen will then flash black and re-enter the game I was playing at the same point I was at. I can get this error frequently at times (every 10 seconds or so) and sometimes go for an hour or 2 before getting it. Example games that cause it are:
Dead Island, Skyrim, The Old Republic.
On the other hand, some of my older games like Civilisation V and League of Legends do not cause this error ever.
I've been trying to troubleshoot this for a while, I've:

- Updated my drivers
- Updated to Latest BIOS
- Installed an extra side fan to keep the system cooler

Can anyone help me find a solution to this issue?

What are the running temps of the card? Are they overclocked?

Have you tried using OCCT error checking?

What are the rest of the system specs?

Display driver dropouts usually indicate a problem with the card, if OCCT throws up any errors then as long as the card is still in warranty you should be able to get a replacement.

I was terrified when I got these on my 580, but luckily the problem was linked to my processor's BCLCK and not the card, as I raised it to 103 and lo! No more errors :)

It sits at a standing temperature of about 50-60C and I've seen it go up to about 87C whilst playing games. This is the same in games that do have the error and games that don't have the error which is why I've discounted the idea of it being the temperature. Theyre not overclocked.
What is OCCT? And where can I get it?
My system specs are 750W Power.
AMD Phenom X4 9650 Processor.
Acer Aspire G7200 motherboard.

OCCT is a GPU stress testing program, google is your friend. I would post a link but I'm on mobile broadband.

As I said, did you clean install?

Thanks for the advice, I'll give reseating it a go first and if that doesn't resolve the issue I'll get OCCT and hopefully find out a little more.

Hi again,
I haven't tried to reseat the gpu yet however I have downloaded and used OCCT.
By doing the GPU stress test I had the same error almost straight away.
'Display Driver has stopped repsonding, and has recovered successfully'.
What does this mean? :s
