Hi guys.

Was hoping you'd be able to help me out with something. I recently built my first pc. 6700k on asus pro gaming z170 mobo and it all went fine. I was using my old radeon 6970 ice q.

However today my zotac 1070 amp extreme arrived along with a Dell s271dg. At first I wasn't sure what cables to use as the zotac need 2x 8. My psu is the evga 650w g2 and came with two cables that were 8 on one side and a 6 and 6+2 on the other side. I've plugged two of those into the card, the 8 on to the psu and the 6+2 in to the card. When I switch it in the green light comes up above the power on the card and the leds on the cards light up too.

However it makes an awful racket like the fans are rattling with plastic inside of them almost. And it doesn't pick up the monitor at all through the dp cable. I manged to get on by plugging the monitor into usb and in the device manager the graphics card doesn't appear.

One last point is that I had to plug the card into the second pci express slot on the mobo as the USB cable blocks the top one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

I would first try make it fit in the top slot to see if it's a motherboard limitation.

You haven't plugged a EPS cable into the GPU instead of a PCI cable right? ( not sure that an EPS cable would even fit though so i would imagine they would design the pinout differently. )

Did you uninstall all of your amd drivers also before replacing?

The placing of the usb3 on the mobo means it won't ever fit in the top slot the card would completely cover it. I didn't install any amd drivers. Is this something windows may have done automatically?

I have just googled the motherboard and don't see a USB3 header on the motherboard anywhere near the top slot. Their is one above it to the side of the x4 lane however your gpu should in no way go near this so am struggling to see why it wont fit? A picture would go a long way.

You should really have installed the drivers however not sure if windows would have done this automatically. Have you made sure that in the bios it's set to run on GPU and not integrated graphics. Can't comment on the racket a the fan isn't being touched by a cable grinding it or something?

What motherboard?

Is your new monitor working?
Swapped cables?

The fans shouldn't rattle.
If there isn't anything obstructing the fans then you may have to return the card if the fans or cooler are damaged.

You should have 2 x 6+2 pin connectors looking at a review, in which case use them.
I think the 8 pin that you are talking about is meant to go into the motherboard for the CPU

Oh you weren't trying to get it in the bottom PCI-e connector near the usb connections? You want the top one nearest the cpu

I may be explaining the cables incorrectly. They have a plug with 8 holes on one end and the other has two ends. One with 6 and one with a 6 with a 2 attached to it
They were labelled vga. The 8 is plugged into vga1 and vga2 and the 6 and 2 in the card

Yes it is. It's the wire of the USB cable that gets in the way. The zotac card is absolutely enormous. There is no way I can make it fit with the USB plugged in. From what I understand the second pci express slot will work the same as the top one.

Looking at the manual for your motherboard and the gray slot is the only PCI 16x slot. this should not make a difference but as we have said it's worth ruling out.

Ok cheers. I'll give that a try when I get home and see if it makes a difference. I'll install the drivers and see if that makes any difference at all.

Right got home and think I've got it working fine now. It's picked up correctly in the top pci slot after I downloaded the drivers. The front usb aren't that important anyway do not too bothered about that.

I feel pretty foolish about the noise. There was a small wire that I couldn't see hidden underneath the card!

One more quick question. I've downloaded the firestorm software to go with the Zotac. The GPU temp target is 83 degrees C.

Is this something I should lightly lower? Or best just to keep the default settings for now.

I'd keep it on default for now. You can always manually control the fans should you need to.
