I've had my hoover now for about 18 months, it's a bagless Electrolux vitesse petlover and I got it because its specifically for pet hair etc. It works brilliantly at getting up the hair and general dirt, but its started going off after about 5 minutes, and then it takes about half an hour before I can use it again.

I know its not that it's overheating because its only been on literally 5 minutes, but its getting annoying that I can't even hoover one room before it switches itself off.

Any ideas what it might be? It only cost like 50 quid off Amazon, but I expected it to last longer than this.

I don't use it every day no, maybe once, sometimes twice a week. Will go and take it to bits to check all that now.

Nothing is blocked. It's almost like something is fusing because it just turns off, although the fuse can't have gone because it starts up in the first place.

The lead is always out due to where I have to plug it in.

It must be a bi metallic strip in there somewhere causing it to go off.
I can't see any other reason it would.
So it is either that sensor covered in hair, it is failing or a build up of heat close to the sensor.

Time to take it apart and get rid of the cat crap inside :D

I don't have a cat, its rabbit and dog hair. :p

And I wouldn't have a clue how to take it apart! :(

I had one of those, it was a pile of ****. It used to cut out all the time. Have you tried washing the filter? Dirt seemed to collect at the back of it and cause a blockage.

I've smacked it against the wall outside to get all the dust off it, but never washed it no. I have this slight paranoia about getting anything electrical wet, even though it says on the filter I can.

You can take the filter out, then wash it (It twists off). Then leave it somewhere warm overnight to dry it out.

If it's an Electrolux it's not a Hoover.

Just sayin...

Stole my thunder :(

Definitely sounds like overheating (or a faulty sensor reporting an overheat) to me if just leaving it to cool down fixes it.
Thing is it could be something simple like an old/dirty filter causing the motor to thermal shutdown, or something annoying like a dry solder that loses its connection when the PCB expands slightly with heat.

First bet would be clean all the filters out thoroughly, or replacing them even.

I used to repair vacuum cleaners, the problem described is probably due to reduced airflow. The motor has a thermal cut out that triggers when it gets too hot. I'm not familiar with that model but it will have filters. If you feel extravagent then buy new ones or just remove them and bang out the dust.
Or it may be blocked, remove what bits you can and look through the tubes or drop a £ coin through them.
Also check around the brushes and the brush roll itself. If its not free spinning then it will cause the motor to labour and wear out the belt prematurely.

Take it to bits, clean the filter of hair and crap.
More than likely overheating, happens to vaccums every so often unless you live in a family of skinheads.

I wouldn't buy a new one, waste of a hoover, waste of money, I would place money on hair clogging up something.
