So I was playing overwatch and heard something and it stank. Assumed it was the psu but I just put in another psu and when I press the power switch just a red light flashes on psu. Any idea what this might be. Gut feeling says mobo

If the PSU failed you'd be able to smell it. Does the 'dead' PSU smell like the magic smoke escaped?

List the make and model of components to avoid everyone having to guess.

I had evga supernova g2 1k watt in there.

It’s been rma’d back

Now I have a Corsair rm 850x in there but it still not starting just red led quick flash.

Yes it smelt a lot which I was sure was the psu. But now maybe not I guess

Would

would a heat sink normally catch fire if the mobo is dieing?

To me it looks like the gpu has burnt the motherboard as you can scorting right across where the gpu was, look at the black cable in your picture just below is a round resisotor looks liked it also scortched.

The only otherway to find out is to inspect the back of the motherboard.

Does the gpu have burn marks i cant really tell from the picture ?

TBH the gpu looks more burnt to me. Genuinely feel like flame came from the gpu but no idea how it’s not even old

It may not be old but could be faulty so your gonna have to send it back if you think its that, does your pc still work with onboard graphics?

Literally just tried it with only cpu psu and sound card connected. When turning it on only the led came on sound card came on. Surely that is a dead mobo? Got the psu today.

Also as per below resistor where gpu wouldn’t have contact is burnt

You would know if aluminum had reached its ignition point...
It burns hot enough to melt iron.

There's definitely some very burned looknig traces on that motherbaord between slot and that heatsink.
Unless graphics card burned seriously from that location scorching motherboard while at it.

That's polymer electrolytic capacitor.
But it definitely has gotten hot.
