Issue with Radeon 5850 and DVI display

Hi everyone,

Im in need of a bit of collective advice really, sorry if this proves a simple question to answer.

Recently building a computer for scratch for a family menber: ASUS M4A79XTD EVO motherboard, XFX Radeon HD 5850, 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 memory, AMD Phenom II x4 965 CPU and a 1TB Samsung F2 HDD make up the core components.

Put everything together smoothly and without incident. I don't actually have a copy of Windows 7 with which to install yet as it is still in the post, however, as this isn't my first rodeo, I decided to power on to see that the computer would allow me to check the BIOS.

This is where the problem arises-plugging the DVI cable from my Viewsonic monitor into either DVI input on the graphics card resulted in the computer posting one long beep, then three short beeps (which the manual takes to mean "no graphics card detected", though I know this could also be a memory issue).

I swapped the memory around various configurations, including using one DIMM- not the issue.

I tried using an old Radeon x1900xt and the computer booted fine with display output.

I then (as Ive seen this problem before and it has always baffled me) brought out a different monitor that is strictly VGA; put a VGA to DVI converter on the cable, plugged that into the 5850 and the computer booted fine with display.

More confused, I even lugged the thing downstairs to plug directly into the TV via the cards HDMI output- again it all worked fine.

Is this issue a specific problem with my card's DVI ports? Should I return the card? Or do you think this will be fixed by installing windows and the Catalyst drivers? Im stumped? I put it down to the BIOS outputting a very basic display that would suit VGA 'bandwidth', but this was blown out the water by the 1900xt working perfectly and one of my mates chortle-snorting his Vimto at me.

Even weirder, the computer starts up fine with no POST warnings when no display at all is attached to the card. Only when a DVI cable is plugged in directly does the machine not POST.

Gentlemen... to you...

You were very specific about all of your system except the monitor. What model is it? Have you been able to use that monitor connected using that cable to the X1900XT? Also - have you made sure to connect two 6-pin PCI-E power cables to the GPU as required?
