Server with 6 73GB Hard disks added to a array running RAID 5 with one Logical drive presented to the OS no Hot spares (Not our normal standard we normally have a RAID 1 logical drive for the OS C:\ then a RAID 5 logical drive for the data D:\)

The Server which is a HPDL380 G5 had a failed drive Disk 4 so HP came out pulled the Disk and replaced it during this time i am not sure if the drive rebuilt or not but the server was shutdown and restarted and it will now not boot it comes up with the ntoskrnl.exe is missing error message. The Raid controller finds the Logical drive during boot when looking in the Raid controller bios the disk Drive HP replaced is 146GB rather than 73GB but this shouldn't cause a issue as it will just use the 73GB when the drive rebuilds ? when looking at the controller its losing other disks as well for example Disk 1

is it worth trying to repair the OS ? eg copy over a working ntoskrl, chkdsk , fixmbr, fixboot, Repair OS install etc or is it best to trash the array and recreate and install the OS and restore from backup ?

or is this likely to be hardware related eg Backplane/Raid controller ?

Possibly unrelated to the disk swap. Even if the rebuild was incomplete, the SmartArray can suspend and resume the rebuild as many times as necessary until it completes. And as long as you don't lose another disk, you still have all the original data.
