Hello Guys,
Bit new, so not 100% sure where this should go. Its sort of a graphics card/ motherboard mix problem. With a suggestion for what graphics card i should get at the end.
I have got an old computer about 3-4 years old that i'm sort of up dating so i can give it to a friend.
The motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2
Graphics card (at the time): GT 430
When I was using the computer, It had a random fault whereby it wouldn't recognize the graphics card I had plugged in to the PCIe slot. This was very frustrating as i would constantly have to reboot and it was a game of luck as to weather it would consistently recognize the graphics card (I did change the BIOS settings to boot from PCIe first, this did not work).
Fast forward a year or two, I managed to get a Quadro graphics card from work with a 6 pin power connector to test weather or not a dedicated power connection to the graphics card would give it more presence on the board. This seems to have fixed it, i've rebooted multiple times and had it in for about a month now with no issues what so ever.
My question is then, with this particular board, has anyone else had this sort of problem?
Its an issue because I am looking for a graphics card upgrade. Do you think its more likely that the graphics card or the board was faulty?
And should I opt for buying a card that has a power connection? If you think I don't have to this, that means i can drop the budget to around 60-70 and not have to spend as much. As the first cards i see on this site with 6pins start at about 90-100£.
The card is only going to be used to play WoW/ watch films and applications like word and excel.
Thanks for any input,
J.
