Hi,

Bit of advice. I have a Abit IP35 Pro XE system which has 5 Sata Hard drives and 1 Sata DVD all run from a Corsair HX620 PSU.

Today I tried to add an old IDE 320GB to the system and this is when I had a bit of an issue.

I connected up the IDE cable to the system and the power connect (yes the correct way round before you ask) and then switched on the system.

The system did not fully boot and in about 10 seconds I could smell that horried PCB burning smell. I ditched the power pronto.

I have now unplugged the IDE 320GB device hoping that if I restarted I would be OK but alass the system now does not power on just runs through a short power blip on for 2 secs then off then on for 2 secs then off.

Suggestions on likely cause PSU or Motherboard? How do I go about faulting out what has bown up?

You advice would be appreciated.

Process of elimination. Unplug as much as you can till you're down to CPU, one RAM stick, GPu and HDD and see if it boots.
 
Right,

Taken everything out, tried diff RAM, diff GPU so looks like either MB or PSU.

How do I test the PSU as it looks like it could be that?
 
What are the full specs of the PC? And how old was the PSU?

p.s. I think the PSU is definetly gone, however I hope that it didn't take anything with it.
 
Can you check for any burn marks on the motherboard, I had something quite similar to you once with an ASUS board (power on for 2 seconds then off) and it turned out that the board was the issue where it was earthing itself on the case.
 
It seems less likely that a few extra watts would cause the PSU an issue, more likely the IDE drive + mobo did something bad to each other. But obviously a slight power issue anywhere can cause a psu to trip and do bad things to itself.

As others have said, i'd be trying to find a burn mark, often it will be on a connector, the atx connector might have gone and could show burn marks around one of the pins, or the ide connector, somewhere around that area on the mobo.

If there is burning on say the mobo or the atx connector I'd assume thats whats faulty and RMA that, if you can't find anything I'd ask for advice from whoever you got the psu/mobo from, if you happen to have gotten both from the same store maybe ask if you can send both back and they can work out which is faulty(maybe both) and send the working bit back with replacement part.
 
Update,

I have just been down my local computer shop who were happy to sell me a very basic 500W PSU for 15 quid.

I know sounds daft but dont want to spend a fortune on the wrong bit.

I have swapped the PSU and its still the same so looking very much like the MB which if it is will cause me some problems as I cant see that the IP35 Pro is manufactured anymore so will have to get an equivalent MB with similar spec of 6 sata connectors and DDR2 memory

The full system is as follows:- and was purchased in April 2009 so almost 2 years old and came from Overclockers

You say RMA, long are the MB and PSU warrantied for?
 
A big thank you to all that replied.

I have now spoken with OC and the MB is not under warranty.

I have also run up my Corsair PSU out of the rig and tested all the rails and all seem to be providing the correct voltage. Likewise the new cheap PSU is also providing the correct voltages.

I have now got the MB out but I am damed if I can see any damage to it where something let go and so I will have to take the plunge to find a replacement MB.

Does anyone know of a good board that I can replace the ABIT IP35 Pro XE with?
It must have 6 x Sata connections, DDR2 and be able to support the Gforce 8600 GTS that I have.


OC suggested the Foxconn P45AL but they are out of stock at the moment. I would also like a board that is easy to overclock as I did buy the MB as a package from OC that overclocked the Q6600 to 3.2Ghz
