Issue with /var size

I have an issue understanding why my /var directory has gotten so full.

df -h reveals:

/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-lvol01 Mounted on /var is 100% in use (Total size 2GB)



du -sc * | sort -n reveals:

that the total size of the folders within /var is 79972

Am I missing something obvious and has it been a long day.
