OK Matt, riddle me this. Why do I sometimes get a warning when I start my PC that my monitor may not be able to run to its full capacity?

Then why, when I play Dying Light, is Vsync 30HZ? IE 30 FPS?

I've had to disable it, which I'm not very pleased about.

Is this a driver bug? or a problem with my monitor?

Oooh, the plot thickens. What refresh rate is Windows showing the monitor working at? is it only Dying Light that's giving you a 30fps vsync? What framerate do you get without vsync on?

I think I know the answer, do you get 60fps or over with vsync off at 4k? Or does your frame rate hang around 40 or 50fps?

^^ This. That's why I asked about other games and what fps you get with vsync off. If you don't get enough frames to match your refresh rate vsync will drop your fps to match 1 frame per 2 refresh cycles - ie 30.

What's your refresh rate set to? And what is your game set to of it allows you to select refresh rate.

That's what I see in CCC. It's fine with Witcher 3 I get mid 40s with Vsync on, but turn it on in Dying Light and I'm immediately stuck at 30 FPS max.

Yeah this is an issue with Dying Light's Vsync if you not able to match 60fps vsync will cap half the frame rate..
This has been an issue with vsync from day one. Some games handle vsync better while others like Dying Light dont..

FreeSync really works well with this game for the above reason.

You could try RadeonPro and enabling Triple Buffering Andy, but i don't know if that will fix the issue.

It's double buffering, most games tend to give you a triplebuffering approach and thus can run at intermediate frames rates (between 30 and 60) but double buffering places you at a frame rate divisible by 60 (i.e 30,20,15,12,10,6,5,4,3,2 annnnnnd...... 1 ;) ). In English even if you have enough power to run at 59 fps it's will still drop you to 30 fps and likewise if you run at 29 fps it would drop you to 20.

How do I do that? can you give me some pointers? I've never used it before.

It's been a while since I used radeonpro.

But if I remember correctly, you just download and install radeonpro, bottom right make sure 32/64bit is showing.

Add the .exe file for dying light just like you would with ccc.
Select the profile and continue to edit your settings enabling triple Buffering or even dynamic-vsync just like Nvidia Adaptive-vsync.
