A little while ago, my PC as in sig developed a strange habit. It would randomly freeze, all open programs would stop responding, the little Vista blue spinning wheel would pop up, it would stay there for manybe 5-10 seconds, then normaloty would be restored. I assumed the HDD was on its way out as it hd been getting a little louder over the last month or so, so I popped in a new Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB and re-installed Vista, I have removed the old HDD from the computer all together. I have spent the last 2 days letting Microsoft update and restart the computer constantly until I am now fully updated, I have SP2 on Vista x64. Then the problem has started again. Exactly as before, PC working fine, then suddenly everything stops responsing, then 5-10 seconds later, everything starts responding again!

Any ideas?

Cheers

Andy

I do on occasion, but since the re-install, I only connected it to replace my Docs, Music and Video which I had moved to the Ext HDD so I dodn't lose them. Could it be causing the problem?

I know this thread is a fossil, but thought I'd update it.

I still have the same PC running Vista x64 and the problem I originally posted about came and went for a year and a half. Eventually it was near constant and added a not starting element, when I started the PC it'd beep intermittently and not start the fans would spin the lights would come on but nothing else. Agin this was occasional, but annoying.

A couple of techs at work looked at it and when ever they went any where near it it worked fine. They suggested duff memory at first.

Eventually turned out to be the power supply, a new 750w job boshed in and all is fixed, overclocked again, running perfectly again. Fantastic.

Techs at work were surprised the PSU was at fault, but now 3 months after the swap its running fine. Now over 3 years old, and still running new games fine on my ancient CRT screen.
