Issues installing MSI Geforce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X

My MSI Geforce GTX 1050 Ti Gaming X arrived today, however I kept getting a message on my monitor
saying something a long the lines of "cable not connected".

This card has a 6 pin connector however I've read in the manual that it is "supplementary"
which leads me to believe it isn't necessary, my 300w psu doesn't support 6 pins to my knowledge.

Now I'm in an odd position as I managed to get the HDMI to display on my old graphics card by changing
some settings on my monitor.

So there exists the possibility that the 6 pin isn't required and the issue was my monitor settings.
However I'm not very accustomed to hardware installation so I would really like confirmation here first
before I start taking my computer apart again to install the new card.

Is the 6 pin absolutely required for this model of the 1050 Ti? I know for certain that some can run without it but I've heard this is a more powerful model so I'm not sure.

The fan on my new graphics card wasn't spinning at all either which just adds further confusion. I'm not sure if it should be spinning as soon as it's plugged in or if I need to install new drivers first.

Can you borrow a PSU with a 6 pin to test your card?

I don't really know anyone with decent PC hardware unfortunately. I've just noticed there's a telephone number on the box
so it might be worth me ringing it.

Edit: Under closer inspection of the box under minimum requirements it says "One 6 pin PCI express supplementary power connector"

I'm guessing I definitely do need the 6 pin then.

Guess I'm going to have to try and get a refund.

Yes a molex to 6 pin will work - I use one with my 1060. As long as you have 2 free molex plugs you should be fine. Often gfx cards include a converter cable in the box in my experience.
