My new GTX 1060 came today. Got the old card out and trying to install the new one. But the old card had two slots for the plugs to go into, one six pin and one eight pin, which the two cables slotted into. The new card only has one slot with six pins. I've tried it but while it's getting power from the cable that's in, there's no picture when I turn the PC on. I'm assuming the second cable is to connect the card to the display?

Somebody please help! :(
 
Those connections from your power supply are to feed extra power to the card internally!

Have you connected your monitor to one of the outputs of the card either via HDMI or Display Port?
 
Remove the cmos battery for 5 minutes then replace. Reseat the card making sure it is seated correctly in the pcie slot. Make sure the 8 pin power cable is securely plugged in to the card and the power supply. Check that the cable from your monitor to the graphics card is plugged in properly and retry. If this doesn't work you may need to update your mobo bios.

EUREKA!!

It was so damn obvious it was staring me in the face the whole time. I had a sudden flashback to when I installed the old graphics card. The 8 pin is on an adaptor that's connected to the two 6's! The old card needed both the 6 and the 8 to make it work, that's why I had to use that.

All I had to do was remove the adaptor and put one of the 6 pins into the slot. Problem immediately solved.

Oh my god the feeling of relief is unbelievable. Thought I'd bought a £230 card I couldn't use. *sigh* As happy as I am, this makes me miss my mum all the more. She used to work in a computer assembly plant, she was the one in fact that helped me install the old card. She'd have known in an instant what the problem was....
