Issues with my fan (I think)

'Hi,

I have a Toshiba Satellite A300 series laptop and today it keeps turning off without reason. After it switches off, it does feel very hot and I am guessing that the cooling fan may not be working. I currently have my desk fan blowing through the vent to keep the laptop cool and it seems to be working fine so I am guessing that I need a new fan.

I am pretty clueless when it comes to what's inside the laptop. I wonder, does anyone know if I have to use a specific type or brand of cooling fan or whether any fan will do. It would help me out greatly if anyone could link me to some suitable ones. Ideally under £30 if that is possible'

Above, I wrote yesterday on a forum that turned out to be rubbish. Today it doesn't seem to be turning off and I don't know if that's because the fan is working or not, I can't feel air coming out so I am still guessing not, since yesterday the computer did reboot and install some updates, before that point, I hadn't restarted it for a while, so maybe that had something to do with it? I don't know :s

Thanks for any help you might be able to give me about what you think is causing this and if it is the fan, a push in the right direction of a new on would be very helpful.

Thanks

Dom

Welcome to the forums :)

As suggested above clean out your fan intakes and exhaust. Only remove access covers if your laptop is out of manufacturer/supplier warranty because breaking these seals will make your warranty void.

If it is still in warranty return it to be fixed

Or if you are sure that the fan is kaput ( can you hear it running? ) and want to attempt changing it yourself you'll find the info you require here

pretty certain it's the fan, it just cuts out unless I have the desk fan blowing through it. I blew into the fan and it seemed to power up and then stop again. Annoyingly, replacing it looks quite difficult and I have no clue as to what replacement fan to buy.

Alternatively, what are these cooling pads like? They keep the laptop cool with a broken fan? I'd imagine I'd have to keep it on a desk and wouldn't be able to use it in bed? If they do work, anyone know of a good one?
