Issues with SSD & Windows

Hey guys

Recently upgraded to an OCZ SSD and as installed win 7 onto the drive.

I also have a 640gb HDD for general files and folders but since I have reinstalled windows it won't show in my computer. I have been into Device manger and tried to format the drive but get a message saying windows cannot format the sytem partition on this disk.

Also if i select under BIOS the SSD drive as the boot disk it doesnt recognise the drive as having the boot files although Windows 7 is definately installed on this drive. I have to select the Samsung HDD I have.

Any of you have any idea as this is really bugging me and Google has let me down.

+1 to ginger-menace: are you in ahci mode?

Also which SATA port on your motherboard are you plugged into? I found that when I was in port 6 I had loads of boot problems. Switched to port 1 and everything was fine. There is nothing wrong with port 6 I just think there was some kind of AHCI driver / bios boot menu issue.
 
I have Just enabled the AHCI and followed the steps for the regedit. I still cant select my SSD as my boot drive.
 
Okay wait so you successfully installed win 7 onto the SSD. Then you shut down the computer and plugged in your old HDD. Then turned on the computer and it would not boot.

Do you also have a copy of windows installed on the HDD?

Can you boot to the SSD if you take the HDD out again?
Have you tried booting to the windows 7 disk again and trying recovery mode?

I had the hdd plugged in aswell as the SSd. When I installed windows 7 I selected the ssd as the destination. When I go into bios and select the ssd as the boot disk iget the error messag BOOTMGR is missing. And it will not boot into windows?
 
Since you had both drives in during installation some boot files went onto the HDD which is annoying since you can't do anything to avoid this. Reinstall Windows again with just the SSD attached and it will boot by itself just fine.
 
Ah okay. I have an idea.

When I installed windows onto my first ocz vertex I also had a couple of HDDs plugged in as well. When you install windows it creates a 100mb partition. I am not really sure what it is for exactly. 'Recovery and boot files' seems to cover it.

But basically when I installed windows 7 to my ssd the 100mb system partition was created on one of my HDDs. This meant that even though I had my OS on my SSD I needed to have my HDD plugged in as well or I could not boot. I have no idea why windows install did this automatically. I didnt even notice it at the time.

But if you have formatted the hdd or done anything else that might disrupt its 100mb system partition then that might account for the errors you are getting.

EDIT: got beaten to it!
 
Right guys problem solved, I removed my HDD and booted using the Win7 CD, did a system recover and rebooted using my SSD. All is fine. So for those who are thinking of installing windows 7 onto an SSD make sure you disconnect your HDD's. Thanks all for your help
 
Gald you got it sorted mate.
i installed my ssd this morning and was told before i did it to remove hdd's first. Lucky, otherwise i would have started the exact same thread today:D

Cheers bud, I've spent all bloody afternoon scratching my head and getting rather annoyed. Now time to enjoy the quick speeds and my new HD6950 :D
 
Yeah when you do a windows install, even if it isn't an SSD, its best to remove all other HDD's, or all manner of problems can occur with drive designations and boot problems.
