issues with VLC and MPC-HC (Full screen)

for some reason both of these players cause my PC to crash - the picture freezes and i cant do anything apart from switch off the PC. However this only occurs when i am in full screen mode ie i select file and then video - full screen

In windowed mode it seems fine

I would check graphics drivers .. full screen uses a different interface D3D afaik, to hardware, versus the normal desktop.
