Hi,

Just found the iStatPro widget for my MacBook and it's ace! Tell's me almost everything I would wan't to know about how my mac is running at the press of one button (F12). I say almost, because I'd like to know about the temperature of my mac, which it has an option for, but won't let me select...

...A quick browse over to the official site and it informs me of a kernal extension i need to install to enable it.

The Site said:
Please note: The SpeedIt kernal extension is required to view temperatures on Intel Macs. Fan sensors on Intel Macs can not be read using iStat pro yet.

SpeedIt Downloads

After jumping over to the SpeedIT downloads, I identify the download I need. (The top one). There is one slight thing that worries me.

This version of SpeedIt is a special build, just containt the kernel extension and you have to load it by hand or other methods as it's has not installer.

This version set up the Core Duo in low power mode, extending the battery life by 20-30 %. And reduce the temperature by 5-10 ºC.

This is the final preview, comes preconfigured and you can not change the default values.

This version introduce a correction to solve issues with temperature reading on some MacBooks.

To anyone who use's this, does this mean that the CPU in my MacBook will start to run in a low power mode? Will it decrease performance? I have a C2D model, so will it even work? It mentions nothing about C2D's

Also, isn't messing with the kernel like playing with fire? Quite dangerous?

If it says its running in low power mode then I think it's safe to assume it's underclocking the CPU in the process.

You might want to ask them via email about the C2D compatibility, I'd be cautious to use it just to save the 5 C :o

Ooo, that looks quite nifty. I'm going to assume it use's less resources than a widget would too!

I was just wondering about the temperature out of curiosity. Especially when i have it sat on my bed with me.

I think the easiest way to do this is to download and install CoreDuoTemp, since it does all the SpeedIt stuff in the installer (without messing with your system...i hope :p ). It allows you to measure the temperature with iStatPro (which explains why I haven't had to download the SpeedIt thing), and is also a really good temperature thing on its own :)

So are all the laptops programmed to automatically drop the clock speed when not doing much? The coreduotemp program say's that the clock speed keeps dropping from 2ghz to 1.5ghz. (On a macbook)

That iStatPro widget is weird. It displayed the temperature of my C2D MacBook fine for a while, then one day it just stopped and the option was no longer selectable.

I had iStat for a bit but it was using 50mb of memory when I needed it elsewhere. I removed it.

Sorry, I'm not talking about the widget anymore, I'm talking about the program CoreDuoTemp. Didn't want to create a new thread!

No, idle around 60, but my room is very cold though so therefore this temperature worries me. I have seen it hit 80ish aswell, before the fan kick's in!

Mines idles 46-55 sometimes lower if my room is cold. Highest i've had mines at load is 76C.

Those temps are fine. If you want you can change the fan settings so the fan runs faster at base speed and change threshold values so the fan kicks in faster than before.
