All,

Due to my previous position being made untenable (was an IT Technical Manager) I am between roles currently.

I've been offered some cash to do some further training and was wondering if I could get some input as to which direction I should go in?

I am traditionally from a Windows Server background (2003/2008), Exchange 2003, SQL 2005/2008, etc, but am also very good with CISCO (ASA/PIX devices), Checkpoint (FW1) and general networking (VLANs, etc) and pretty good with Linux/Unix (basic admin).

In terms of server admin, it appears that businesses are going in the direction of VMware/SAN - which I have no experience of. I also notice that many networking roles require CCNAs, etc.

Therefore, do you think I should be looking to train up in VMware, or would have better prospects doing CISCO? Or should I even look at Unix?

Cheers.

Everyone needs networking and i cant see this changing any time soon ;)

vmware's an interesting one, MS are making big inroads into this sector now and i can see VMware's presence reduce an awful lot in the near future. especially if they keep up with there convoluted licensing! There is a lot of money to be earned though in the current market!!

Unix is a very specific job requirement, usually you need to be very good at one aspect and finding the job that makes use of this skill can be difficult, but the rewards are handsome! Its not really something that you can just pick up on :)
