Hi guys,

I've been having issues with Fallout 3 on PC ever since I first tried to play it years ago. I originally bought the G4WL version, which wouldn't work and would crash almost instantaneously, and since I have tried various versions downloaded from the net, various patches, various so called 'fixes' and the "inumhwthreads=2 busethreadedai=1" trick and nothing has worked.

In the end I bought an Xbox 360 and the 360 version so I could play the game, and I was completely addicted, thoroughly enjoyed it, but I want to play through it again, on PC if at all possible as I no longer own a console.

The game ran on my old HP laptop for some reason, but I could only play it on low with 20 - 25FPS because the machine wasn't cut out for gaming.

So does anyone have any ideas yet? At the moment I have a game which runs for at least 30 minutes, but has graphical tearing, glitches and audio stuttering instead. I can also only run it in windowed mode otherwise it crashes when I tab out.

I am determined! :D

Does the Steam version have these issues? I would buy it again on Steam if that version works.

I must be an exception to the rule because I haven't had any problems with the PC version as far as I'm aware. I've finished it on both of the consoles and the experience was absolutely horrible after the save file reached a certain size, but I can't recall any problems with the PC version, this is using both disc based and Steam versions.

I have vegas and fo3 goty and not have any problem as of yet your problem could have been fixed since you state you tried to play years ago.

Could I ask you what your PC spec is (or was at the time) and the OS you are running (or were at the time) if it isn't too much trouble? :)

Mine is in my sig, but I have tried with other GPU's. (All NVIDIA though) It worked on my laptop (Turion II Ultra X2, 4GB DDR2, HD4530M)

Also I was trying to play it about 10 minutes ago actually :(

I have tried with at least 3 GPU's in this system (480, 660, 670) and I tried before and after my re-build (changed everything bar the CPU and half of the RAM and installed a new OS of course)

plus works great on my sig specs

I dont understand then... My spec is very similar to yours, we both have sandybridge i5's, both have GTX670's, both have our OS on 256GB Samsung SSD's (mine is an 830 though)

Tonnes of people have had this problem in the past, Google is stuffed full of people complaining about it and looking for fixes, but then there are loads of people saying it is fine... We just need to figure out what the key difference is between those peoples system configs and we'll have cracked it...

At the moment I've got an AMD hex core CPU and an HD7870 and it works flawlessly. Before that I had an E8400 and an Nvidia 9800GT and it also worked really well. Odd, because there are so many people who have problems with stability but for me it has always just worked regardless of hardware setup. This was in Windows Vista and currently Windows 7, I must be one of the lucky ones. :)

You should just buy the Steam version and see if that's any better for you. :p

But if it isn't then that's £15 down the pan :p I cant even copy my DLC's over cos Steam games are stored all... Weirdly :(

Either of you using/used Xonar cards when playing Fallout 3? Just had someone tell me they had a DX and they made it work by disabling something relating to the sound card. I have always had a DS in my system, more recently an Essence STX.

Even the vanilla version is a tenner on Steam as well! I would wait till Christmas where they'll be giving it away for a couple of quid. Do you have any problems running New Vegas at all?

If I am right the DLC is same as skyrim just copy the right files over and activate in the DLC part of the menu.

Nope, no problems with New Vegas. I haven't even completed it though, it didn't grip me like Fallout 3 did. :( (also no problems with Oblivion or Skyrim)

Its like that for the G4WL version because I have access to the game files, but its different with Steam games isnt it?

I do it with my skyrim DLC on steam all the time so it should work

I'll probably just buy the GOTY edition to make life easier, I can DL it to different machines etc then.

Might have to try it on my other system... See how a pair of old Xeon E5430's handle it :p
