It is finally time..... for a new PC

So, my 8 year old gaming PC (from OCUK) finally died thanks to a couple of spiky power cuts last week. I don't think I have the time, or the inclination, to try and figure out whether it is the PSU or the MB and fix it. Not least of which is that it was getting dated with driver support not available and not being able to run some recent games. TBH I've been meaning to get a new PC organised for a while anyway, so it is time!

I'm really out of date on the tech so I was hoping for a steer on something suitable please.

Here are a few considerations:
- I'm looking for something prebuilt from OCUK; (I used to build my own but I need a quick return to service for work)
- I have been running a 2 monitor set up (for work I have a lot of documents open etc) and for gaming I'll have 1 for the game 1 for everything else. I have a pair of 1920x1080 Viewsonic VA2432 MHDs. 1 has gone faulty though and won't run to its max resolution, never the less they will do for now although I might go up in resolution when I replace them in due course. So a PC that can go to a higher resolution might be wise if it will fit the budget.
- My keyboard and gaming mouse are falling to bits (and to be honest, pretty manky!)
- Philosophically I don't tend to by the very latest tech but rather stuff that is a couple of years since launch (generally a sweet spot for price versus performance).
- Budget ideally max £1500 but I could go a little higher maybe.
- I am out in the countryside now and power cuts are a bit more frequent (probably 1 or 2 a year). Something to help with surge protection maybe?

If any of the assembled luminaries can offer any wisdom I would be very grateful.

Thanks!

You'd need a UPS. Getting one to run your PC for a short time while idle or at low load is not too hard, but gaming is not so easy to do (for cost reasons).

I'd look at a PC with a 7800 XT or 4070 non-Super as your entry-level, especially if you're thinking of playing at 1440p in the future. A lesser card could play at 1440p (especially with upscaling), but they're not ideal and will likely struggle with AAA games in the near future.

The Ryzen 7000 CPUs haven't seen much in the way of cuts yet (they have elsewhere in the world), so you might want to hang on a bit longer to see if anything changes.

Intel 13th-14th gen is very dubious to buy at the moment (given the news) and personally I'd just stick to 12th gen if I was going that route.

Thanks for the input... especially the Intel news that had passed me by.

Look like one for these would hit the spot? https://www.overclockers.co.uk/refract-gaming-celeste-1080p-1440p-pre-built-gaming-pc-fs-1dh-ep.html

Not bad, 7700X is a decent CPU and the 4070 is fine.

Here's a cheaper one with a 7500F and 7800 XT:

My basket at OcUK:
  • 1 x OcUK Gaming Oxygen - AMD Ryzen 5 7500F, GeForce RTX 4060Ti Gaming PC (SKU: FS-1BZ-OG) = £1,337.03
    • Case: 1 x SYSTEM OFFER - APNX Creator C1 Blue Mist Limited Edition Mid Tower Case
    • Memory: 1 x Kingston FURY Beast EXPO 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 PC5-44800C36 5600MHz Dual Channel Kit (KF556C36BBEK2-32)
    • Graphics Card: 1 x SAPPHIRE PULSE AMD Radeon™ RX 7800 XT Gaming Graphics Card with 16GB GDDR6, AMD RDNA™ 3 architecture
    • M.2 Solid State Drive: 1 x WD Black SN770 2TB SSD M.2 2280 NVME PCI-E Gen4 Solid State Drive (WDS200T3X0E)
    • Operating System: 1 x Build Stock Microsoft Windows 11 Home Advanced - Systems

Total: £1,337.03 (includes delivery: £0.00)

I might suggest going with an X3D AMD CPU.

5700X3D is fast and cheap. 7800X3D is very very fast and not so cheap.

9800X3D will be slightly faster than the 7800X3D and more efficient but more expensive.

If I had to choose? 7800X3D. Spend the extra cash as it’ll still be great in years to come.
