Yup, unfortunately got made redundant a couple of months ago as a web dev and found it fairly hard to get something else (have actually got an amazing role now as a web developer, literally 5 mins from where I live and am chuffed to bits with how its turned out - I look forward to going to work now).

If you use recruitment companies choose them wisely, as most will mess you about (make you sign loads of forms, proof of identity etc) and then not contact you. I found by far the most useful ones were those that specialised in IT recruitment. Still, even with the better ones you need to keep on it and keep contacting them regaularly.

I found I got more interviews and interest when I made a portfolio (its nothing amazing, just all the major recent sites I worked on recently and a blurb about all the featuires they have etc etc). Tbh this formed the basis of dicussion for the my interviews.

From what I saw after looking for an webby style for for 2 months (in the Midlands area) is that there are definately the jobs out there but you need to look very hard - the job I actually got was only advertised via recruitment agencies.

One thing I found when dealing with employment agencies was to get the contact details for actual company early on - overall its quicker to just talk to the place where you'll be working, instead of using the agncy as a go between - which gets on on nerves so much (its like another obsticle you have to cross!).

Anyways, enough rambling from me. Good luck in your search.

I set up a profile on cwjobs.co.uk, which is an IT recruitment web site.

Within two hours of setting up I had several calls. I applied for numerous positions but as I am not due to graduate till July, they said they would contact me in May.

I got myself a job down in Reading a few weeks ago, so I'm fairly happy. Means a little less pressure in my final year :)

If you have the skills and experience, I think there will definitely be lots of interest in you from potential employers :)

experience and skills wise not a problem, thanks for that sounds much more promising then I expected. I know the papers are all doom and gloom because it sells papers so i wanted to get a real idea of what the score is and didnt want to slap my cv out there just yet in case it ends up in the email box of my current company as has happened before. now that was awkward :p

Fellow developer here too - I was made redundant in October, and actually managed to get a job on the day they announced I was to go (I'd spent the previous month looking, rather than bury my head in the sand).

Meant a change of direction for me (I was Winforms, and am now ASP.NET), but I can honestly say it was the best thing, job-wise, to have happened to me. So it isn't all doom and gloom - see it as a good opportunity :)

I havent changed jobs recently but i have been keeping my ear to the ground just to have an update to current market. i have recently got a lot of phone calls about "roles" being made avaliable but heard nothing back. so im guessing these recruiters are just taking details and skills you may have and pop them on some sort of database.

one thing i have noticed out there in terms of skills though, is the strong requirement for front end skills now. a lot of javascript/ajax, html, css skills. in a year or 2 i wont be surprised to see reverse ajax out there.
