Hi Guys,

I'm looking to push on in my career and I want to undertake an IT qualification this year. Currently stuck as 2nd Line tech.

I was thinking of doing a MCSE this year.

Does anyone know if you have to complete a MCSA first or can you go straight to MCSE?

Is there something more worthwhile I could study towards other than a MCSE?

Let me know.

Your question really is too open ended. What field do you want to work in? There's software development, database admin (not just SQL), Networking certs, specialisation in RedHat, VMware, Exchange etc.

Needs a bit of narrowing down

I want to stick with AD / Exchange for the time being so probably looking down the Microsoft route for the moment.

MCSE is out of date now - it's 2003 technology.

MCITP: Enterprise Admin is the 'new' qualification so you may want to look at that (for 2008) and there's 2012 qualifications soon as well.

Aren't the new ones MCSEs again for 2012?

I was trying to figure out the best way to upgrade my 2008 MC-whatevers to the new 2012 exams and if it was worth it.

Not according to the Microsoft website.

MCSE listed as Server 2012

But I did think the same as you which is why I asked the question on here. It's not entirely clear which is best to go for.

Ok now second question.

So I suspect the best way to do this would be to get the reading material and learn it slowly over time, practising at home and then book the exams myself.

However you can do those intensive courses can't you?

If (and I'm not saying I will) I did an intensive course do you think potential employers will take that into account and not view the qualification as highly?

Most of them won't know/ask/care. really though it boils down to: Do you think you know enough to backup those certs in the real world afterwards?
