I have been working in IT Support for the last five years. Most of my roles have been 2nd line desktop support within large outsourced environments, with little manouverability for progression or exposure into other areas of IT - eg infrastructure, projects, servers etc.

I have been in my current job for 18 months and attempted to make a move into the server team. A request which soon became fraught with political fall out from my team leader, who still to this very day maintains that a move into server support would not be a positive move for me.

This has understandably frustrated me, and I've been offered another job, working for a smaller company, where I'll be doing a mix of desktop and server support.

When I told my boss about the job offer, he became very angry and was furious with me for going for a job behind his back. In a series of heated E-mail and face to face discussions, I explained to him my rationale for needing to make a move, and he really didn't want to know.

My current employers have actually been really good to me. I am treated very well compared to my colleagues -I have a nice laptop and had a reasonable pay rise to boot. It has also since been arranged for me to begin a desktop/server support role within my existing company, however it is likely to be a month or two before this actually happens, and I have no assurance that they will keep their word.

I feel that I would like to make the move, however have personal concerns about making the move mysef ; these are -

  • Lack of continuity on my CV, I've had 4 different jobs in 4 years - job1 - 1 year in role, job 2, - 2 years in role , job 3 1 yr in role , current job 18 months in role. Surely this is going to make my CV look bad
  • The new role has a 3 month notice period. Although I don't envisage the new role being a short term position, if I ever needed to leave to go else where, would this be likely to adversely affect things

Cheers

What was the reason for the 4 job in 4 years?

Just opportunities which have presented themselves to me. I've gone from being a low end techy/help desk bod to a 2nd/3rd line support quite quickly.

I found that changing companies was a quicker way to do this than staying put.

Well make sure when you write that down, justify the reasons and tart it up to make it sound like progression rather than a lack of commitment or non decisive.
