I've been having niggling Wi-Fi problems on my netgear WGR614 v9 where I'm getting signal drops although I've only noticed it on my iPod touch where the Wi-Fi signal drops from 3 to 2 bars for about 30 seconds so I wasn't sure if it was a problem with the Wi-Fi on the iPod touch itself (the device is in the same room as the router so there isn't any distance issues) although my dad's iPhone 4 always stays at 2 bars on Wi-Fi in the front room (where at times my iPod drops to 1 bar).

Thing went to a head yesterday evening whilst I was downloading the items I'd selected from the PSN welcome back package on my PSP and just after the install of the first game started I heard the usual error noise chimed over the speakers and I'd thought the install had failed but the first check still showed the game still installing until I checked again and found the Wi-Fi activity light was off and behind the install screen there was a error stating that the PSP had been disconnected from the access point, and again about half an hour or so later when I tried to download the second game (I'd actually set it to download both games one after the other but the first dropout stopped that) it happened again and when I checked the iPod it couldn't find a Wi-Fi signal either and it took about a minute or so for the signal to come back (I'm not sure if it is connected but both drops happened whilst I had my laptop on (wired not wireless) since the first drop after I'd logged in) although it did stabilise after the second drop out and it doesn't seem to have had another dropout since (as far as I'm aware).

If this is the death knell for this router then could someone spec me another preferably a cheap model (doesn't need to have N available since I don't need it) that will at least last more then 2 years since I haven't had a router last longer then that yet and must support WEP encryption (the Nintendo DS only supports that encryption type and no one is desperate enough to have to hack in) and for gods sake don't suggest a belkin as I won't touch them with a 50 foot barge pole (had one and it started failing after 6 or so months and finally gave up after well under 2 years).

Also since the failure is in the Wi-Fi on this router after I get the replacement would I be able to switch off the Wi-Fi (and other unneeded components) and use it as a wired switch.

Edit: I forgot to mention if the router isn't available on OCUK then just give me the model number (if the site that sells it i classed as a competitor) and I'll go looking for it myself.

Could be you have other wifi connections nearby interfering with your wireless connection. When you scan for a wireless connection how many other SSID's are listed as well as yours ?

It might be worth changing your channel for the wireless connection.

You could use something like inSSIDer to scan for nearby wireless connections and see which channels they are using you can then change yours to one not in use.

(its also amazing too how many wifi connections come up with no security too !)

It all depends also where your wifi router is positioned and how good the signal strength is and also positioning of the aerial too.

Well my PSP can only detect one network in range (the one it is connected to) when it is in the same room as the router (unless it's near the window then it detects a BT home hub with just 10% signal strength) plus I can rule out any interference from other networks as the network configuration page I can get from my wireless printer also lists the channel the other networks in range of it are running on and those that it detected where on channels 10 (BT home hub 2) and 11 (Sky issued modem/router) and the signals for them were showing at over 80 (higher numbers meant the router in question is further away).

Also I did note that there's a lot of remote access attempts on my iPod touch all with different IP addresses and port numbers but all directing to the same local IP address and port number (that of my iPod touch on port number 17697) so I'm not sure if this is a cause (since there doesn't seem to be any other drops since Friday) or if the router is actually blocking these connection attempts.

I would have thought higher numbers meant the routers were closer, ie strong signal strength.

Not if you use a minus scale (it's a HP wireless printer) as the other routers are showing at between -82 and -84 and my router showing a signal strength of -39 and that is 7 foot away from the router (in the same room).

I forgot to mention that at the time of the failure the router itself was really hot (around the area where the external antenna is located) so I'm not sure if this is relevant to what happened.
