It was acceptable in the 80's.......

As the sun decided to come out properly today I thought it would be nice to clean up the cars and take a few pictures.

We've been running an all 80's fleet for a few months now and I have to say I quite enjoy it. Both cars are rewarding to drive, but in very different ways.

The Golf, although older in our case, is the newer design and it really shows. It's front wheel drive, relatively quiet, feels solid and well screwed together. The engine is refined for the time and the whole car generally has a planted feel to it. It's upright and purposeful, not too brash or in your face. At the time quite a grown up alternative to say, a 205 GTI or Escort XR3.

The Manta on the other hand is by now at the end of it's 12 year design life. It's grown a middle age spread in the shape of sideskirts, heavy bumpers and a rubber spoiler. It's a little bit garish, the red graphics on blue paint say "LOOK AT ME, I'VE STILL GOT IT!"
The interior is basic, far less enveloping than the serious black tones of the Golf. The brakes and engine are lacking in performance, the engine is coarse, the road noise intrusive and the wind noise bordering on unacceptable. But it's rear drive and whilst the Golf would show it a clean pair of heels on any given A-road, the Manta wins when it comes to showboating.

Is it acceptable in these eco-friendly times to be running two 20+ year old cars? I couldn't give a flying one and until legislation prevents me doing so I'll continue to enjoy my retro driving.

Here are the pics. Neither car is anywhere near mint, but they don't scrub up too badly for a pair of old girls.

I'd take the manta, I remember 1st seeing one on a paper round when I was a kid about 20 years ago and still love them now. Tidy golf though :)

I run a 20 year old car for a daily driver and wouldn't swap it for anything. It does everything I need.

Is it acceptable? Of course it is. These things are still perfectly useable, easy to keep going and aren't that bad with regards to emissions either.

Plus, there's the 'saving' from not buying another new car, both fiscal and environmental. Maybe that'll stop someone ploughing a few tons of chemicals and unrecyclable material into a new one....

Why waste, scrap or destroy what's still good :)

Mine's a product of the 80s too, although built in the very early days of 1990.

I've done 4000 miles in 5 months, so far it's cost nothing but fuel and I've averaged 29.8 to the gallon over my mixed range of driving.

Does (and has) everything I need, and more :)

Looking good matey :D
I'm currently running two from the seventies and one from the eighties and love every minute.

Had the a series manta out today in the sun, used a full tank of go go juice just hooning around.
The looks of pure hatred I got off certain people today was worth it :D
Sideways fun is where it's at.

*edit*
I'm on a run down to brighton tomorrow. If the weather is good I might strap the digicam in, the noise this thing makes with a tuned xe lump and a 2" straight through stystem is obscene :D

There is only one thing wrong with 80s cars (or for that matter many 90s cars), the interiors look so dated :(

Shock horror as old interior looks old.

Thing is, a few cars do not look as dated (especially a number of 90s) ones, and generally the bits that look dated are the aircon control areas (as other things can be easily modernised)
