Hi all, I have the itch to upgrade my PC but not sure what. The main thing I was looking at was upgrading my 2500k. Most posts I read tell me the 2500k is still "fine" when overclocked so I'm not sure if it would be a waste of money doing it. If I did upgrade the CPU id probably go for a 5820k/6700k.

I recently bought a mid range i5 haswell for another PC and noticed it performs a lot smoother than my 2500k. my 2500k build seems to have a couple of weird stutters every now and again from when i first boot or when using chrome the mouse will stutter for a couple of seconds. It might seem minor but im also wondering how its effecting my gaming performance which seems fine for some games but it is hard to tell from game to game depending on the engine used. my MMO Archeage has some issues with FPS at times but it could be a game engine issue. Fallout 4 seemed to run ok with shadows disabled.

Am I being silly?

i5 2500k @4.4ghz with Hyper212 cooler
GTX970
8gb ram
500gb SSD
AOC G2460PQU 24" Widescreen 144Hz

the main thing i do is gaming but i do plan to start making videos/recording gaming footage etc. I suppose an i7 would be a big help for that too.

with the 5820k I could still use my DDR3 I believe. and the 6700k is DDR4 only?

You could be right about the system needing a clean install.

So 5820k vs 6700k if i did upgrade....I probably would overclock but most likely run it on air. don't really trust water cooling yet.

both new cpu's are ddr4

for games get an i5. if your going to use all the cores then you need the 5820k

but surely if i was comparing a 2500k to a new i5 the difference wouldn't make it worth buying?

I was hoping the jump from 2500k to a high end cpu would make it beneficial to upgrade

to add to that, yes i mainly plan to game but ive also considered video rendering and recording gaming footage
