SANITY CHECK!

Am I making a mistake in getting a 6850 or 6870 at this moment in time (they are in my budget range at present).

You'd probably be better off holding on for 3 months for the 7000 series to come these cards we probably turn extremely budget but the 6900 series should become budget range hopefully but hey it's how to you if you're itching that badly get one :D

I have my card on my desk.. that's how itching lol.

Realistically I should wait till start of October as I'm in the middle of selling up and moving house, but still... it's the geek in me lol.

Wait, it will be worth it, the process these cards use is getting dated compared to what will be round the corner in 3 months(ish).

And just been offered (from a colleague) a 460 OC. Well, that has stalled my card purchase, as performance wise it goes 6850 > 460 > 6870 (kinda).

ROFL.. caved. Agreed to buy his 460 (least hassle for me). It's a gigabyte OC version with twin fans so should be nice and quiet :-)

Only other question is.. should I sell my gts 250 (very quiet card and good tempts even though it's overclocked), or keep it for physx ? *wack*

Shame that you can't offload tessellation to the 2nd card!!

Aye, you won't be disappointed with that 460. Plus if you're staying nVidia, it's unlikely the Kepler architecture's going to arrive in time for all the major releases anyway.

Really wanted to try out DX11 (I know it won't be earth shattering with this card) although my native res is 1920 * 1200 so concerned I'll be a little down on performance.

Hopefully it'll be enough for BF3 and MW3 and Planetside2. If not, when the time comes I guess I can always sell the card and get something better (I'll be better off at that point tbh).

And now I have my Gigabyte GTX 460 OC 1GB (twin fan with heatpipes) sat on my desk :-D Ooooo 'Shiny'!

It's not a massive upgrade, but it'll give me something to tinker with and should be relatively quiet compared to the 4870X2 and the 5850 I had in the past.

Let's see if it'll do 900Mhz on the core.... quietly.

They're more capable than you think :)

My GTX 460 768MB runs Bad Company 2 maxed with some AA absolutely fine, and bar the odd game, has maxed everything I've thrown at it. I have just bought a Twin Frozr 580 though... :D
