I currently have a 5870 and not had this for long, think i purchased it on July 19th (still got receipt as i bought it instore). I'm itching to switch to a 570 but havent done an extensive research on it as such yet. Whats your view on it? Is it worth upgrading or would it merely be a side switch rather than an upgrade?

I think i may be able to get around £150 for my 5870 on MM or about £180+ on the bay.

First of all, I think although the 570 wil be a slight upgrade, it wont be enough to justify the price difference.

The way I calculate expenditure, is take the price you paid for your card, minus the amount you get back, plus the amount needed for new card.

For example in my instance, I paid £300 for my 5870 (In August similar to you!).

£300 - £150 = £150 spent + amount for new gpu (£270) = £420 for a GTX 570!

Which wont even be a big upgrade either!

The only card to upgrade too is a GTX 580 in my opinion.

I think that a GPU should be keept for an average of 2 years to get your moneys worth.

Can I ask why do you need to upgrade?

That makes sense, how did you come about £420 for a 570 though? I thought they were priced around the £300 marker??

I'm thinking about an upgrade purely because i want to run dual/tri monitors. I know eyefinity would be the better option but since the 6900 series weren't as good as expected to be, i thought maybe the nvidia side of things would be better for what i want right now.

He's accounting for the money lost through resale and adding it to the 570 price tag.

If I done this every time I changed hardware I'd have a shock  very sensible mate ;)

Ah now i understand, it does seem silly! Maybe it's better just to wait for the 7series and the gtx 600 cards?

Guess i'll be waiting out then, kinda sucks as i was hoping so much for these cards to be something better and much more improved but then again you can't expect that much more from 40nm.

Hello Jay . . .

You appear to have the classic tell tale symptoms of Upgraditis . . . this condition is aggravated even further when the following conditions are met:

  • Boredom
  • Excessive Cash
  • Reading OcUk Forums
  • Needing some Retail therapy
You currently have a Radeon HD 5870 . . . this is a fantastic GPU and you really have no need to upgrade . . . . you can try very hard to muster some "justification" that you feel makes enough sense for you to get the credit card out but deep down you know its insanity! :p . . . . use the graphics card you have to play some games and don't come back to this forums until you feel the Upgraditis itch has settled down! :D

I would honestly wait. Unless you play at 2560 resolution, want 3D or play hardcore the few DX11 titles out there, the upgrade path won't really give you a big fps increase.

And if you have money to burn a 6950 CF or 470/570SLI would give a much bigger jump in frames.

Wayne you are right, part of me really wants to upgrade and because i can't find a proper reason to justify it im finding excuses to do so. I really am considering the option of another monitor and higher res game play but at the same time i could probs just save the money and wait out for the next gen or get myself something else... like an SSD?

I hate this illness! damn it :D

Exactly, Wayne is spot on. Is this desire something you can keep up - can you buy a new card every year (and keep your PC up to date etc at the same time)? If you really have too much money, and will continue to have, don't bother starting a thread, just go shopping (I'm not complaining abuot you starting a thread at all, just saying who cares what we think if you're rich). But assuming you can't do that every year, if you get the 570 now, a year down the line when there's some exciting new technology out, you'll feel less justified in upgrading as you've already done it twice in a year and a half. Enjoy your games and upgrade when something a lot better comes out.

Agree with above posts generally, if you still intend on spending some cash then get something that you need rather than want. (Though looking at your rig I'd be hard pressed to find something, very nice btw).

Perhaps a game or two? Or more cash for preseys for your loved ones?

This is basically the money i have left over after buying all the things i need to buy for my loved ones, so what i have left i thought i'd put it towards something for my pc. But like most of you have said, there really isnt anything i could upgrade apart from maybe an extra HDD/SSD.

I could be rich... i could be poor who knows!

I have Upgraditis as well  I recently bought a 6870 on release, and I'm arleady looking at other cards and considering selling my 6870 for an Nvidia card (though this is mainly because I'm not that impressed with the ATI/AMD drivers, the card itself performs very well). I feel like I'm spending far too much on my computer. The problem is, once I've ugpraded one thing, I then start looking for the next bottleneck and start looking at how to upgrade that.

Haha thats what im like, even though nothing needs doing i still go on sites just to see whats on offer and if anything can tempt me into buying it. I spend far too much time browsing for new hardware.
