So, I have a 920 d0 and am itching to upgrade, do i hang on for haswell, is it really going to be a huge step change or just minor performance bonus based on current info?

its a real tough choice, im playing planetside2 and im alternating between being CPU bottle necked and GPU bottle necked, more CPU bottle necked which really makes me want to shift up to a ivybridge and GTX670 platform but im not sure if i should hold on till haswell, anyone have any updates on when its coming?

well with a 690 ive never had any cpu bottlenecks which i can notice. (i.e. not one where the fps reduces below the monitors vsync refresh rate)
so overclock to 4.2 at least ;)

i'd wait until haswell. The current gens wouldn't be a big enough upgrade for you imo. However there is not guarantee haswell will be either...

There are speculations that Haswell would only be 10% faster than Ivybridge clock-for-clock. However any software that makes use of AVX2 instructions set (being introduced with Haswell), the performance may be significantly more.

Turn your in game graphics settings up to maximum, make sure you have hyperthreading turned on and oc to 4.0ghz. Doing the above you should not have a bottleneck on any modern game.

If you are running an old game and getting several hundred fps and a bottleneck its not important. All your monitor can use is 60/120 fps.

When Haswell launches don't be surprised if your i7 920 out performs most of the SKUs, the same as it does with sandy bridge/ivy bridge for gaming. The only CPUs it cannot out perform are the SB/IB CPUs with hyperthreading. BF3 runs better on CPUs with more 4 cores/threads.

Edit I use 2 i7 9xx systems and also an i7 3960x system (which will eat any of the up comming Haswells for breakfast). For gaming there is no noticable difference between any of them.

I'm waiting for haswell before upgrading my 920, and even then I might not do it right away. When decently overclocked the 920 is still plenty strong enough for gaming.

yeah i know when i put the numbers side by side that the 920 still holds up, however....

New....

Shiny....

Want to buy..... :)

You know how it is, the 3 year upgrade itch

Yep, I feel your pain. And some days I almost have to sedate myself just to cope with the itch, but I still think its worth waiting for haswell.

But if you're just about to loose your mind, then go for it. Ivy is pretty decent, it overclocks fairly well (albeit not quite as well as sandy). But don't expect a massive difference in games, beyond the benchmarks the subjective experience will be similar. Imo you're best bang for buck upgrade is a new GPU right now. I run a GTX680, and my 920 doesn't bottleneck it at all.

People wanting to wait isn't it like six months till the new chips are released? That's quite a while really.

I know most people have said otherwise but personally I would go Ivy. My reasoning being that a stock 3770K will beat an OC'd 920 so the 3770K with a decent clock will definitly give you a noticeable performance boost if your CPU bottlenecked at the moment.

Yes Haswell will be more of a boost, however people aren't expecting anything "that" special from it as all of Intels noise about it has been power saving and iGPU orientated. And here's an important part: Haswell is 3-5 months away, is it really worth waiting that long for a little bit more of an upgrade when you can get nice noticeable/usable boost right now? (this is a question only you can answer).

I feel the ivy 3570k is too expensive because it isn't any better than the 2500k.

That's why I want haswell but I dont wanna wait 5 months what should I do?

Just wait for Haswell. Finding it hard to believe a i7 920 would give you any trouble. Maybe a good cooler like a SilverArrow and pushing the CPU a bit.

5870's are 1GB(?). I would replace them with a single 7950 / 7970 / 670.

i just gone from 955 to intel 3570k in a lot of games it is double the speed

the 955 didnt struggle with anything.that is at stock as well

i sold my stuff for 120 and the i5 set up was 300 . so 180 isnt too shabby and it is a big increase. best youll get is 10-15 percent on next chip and you wait 6 months.
