Only just got it - bit much having to pay to upgrade the firmware which then meets the spec! Expected it to be free!!!!!

Thats broadly correct, same reason the wireless-n enabled had to be paid for a while back. It's a US accounting law which means they can't enable additional services or features for free as I recall, it's not there to screw people over remarkably, it does have a roll in preventing dodgy accounting practices...
